Last November it was revealed that Toyota had filed for the trademark “Lexus RC 350,” leading to speculation that this would be the name of a new model from the Japanese luxury automaker.

In Lexus naming tradition, the “RC” part of the name suggested that the new model would likely be a coupe, just like the previous SC, which despite being a convertible still featured a hard-top roof.

The “350” part, meanwhile, signified that the new model would feature Lexus’ 3.5-liter V-6 currently fitted to cars like the GS 350 and IS 350.

At the reveal of the LF-CC coupe concept at the 2012 Paris Auto Show, just a couple of months prior, Lexus confirmed the concept was a preview of a new coupe it was planning to launch, so it's not much of a stretch to deduce that this will be the new RC.

Now, it has been revealed that Lexus has also registered the trademark “RC F,” which means we’re likely to see a high-performance version of the upcoming RC coupe. The RC F trademark was registered by Toyota with the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office just two weeks ago.

Of course, you can't always rely on a trademark database to indicate a company's--especially an automaker’s--future product direction. Nonetheless, with the filing of the previous RC 350 trademark, plus the previous confirmation of production plans for the LF-CC concept, and now this latest RC F trademark, the clues are impossible to ignore.

While it’s still too early to speculate on specific details, whatever engine a future IS F version of the latest 2014 Lexus IS gets, will also likely feature in the RC F. This makes sense as the RC is expected to basically be an IS coupe.

For the RC F (and the next IS F), Lexus may stick with a naturally-aspirated V-8 engine, as found in the current IS F, or go the downsizing and forced-induction route that pretty much all of its rivals have adopted.

Whatever the case is, we’ll bring you the details as soon as they’re made public. Stay tuned for an update.
