Ford’s formula race car powered by its award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine may seem tame considering it’s only producing around 177 horsepower in street-legal trim, but as Chris Harris found out there’s certainly nothing tame about a turbocharged and direct-injected 1.0-liter mill with just over a 1,100 pounds to carry.

For the latest episode of his Drive series, the British journo took the Formula Ford 1.0 Ecoboost (FF1) for a spin on some public roads in Germany before finally taking it out on the Nürburging for some high-speed action.

With power in the car dialed up to 202 horsepower, the FF1 managed to lap the ‘Ring in a time of just 7:22, or about three whole seconds faster than a Ferrari Enzo, when driven by racing driver Nick Tandy.

Ford estimates the car will sprint to 62 mph in under 4.0 seconds and reach a top speed of 159 mph.

The crazy part is that the FF1 has been fitted with lights and license plates and can even have road tires installed, so you could theoretically use one as your daily driver--if you happen to be a masochist.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any confirmation of production plans for the FF1, despite rumblings Ford was interested in building a limited run.

Even if it was built we’re not sure it matters much as we doubt many examples would even make it across the Atlantic, since our regulations concerning things like advanced airbag systems are a bit inflexible compared to regulations in Europe. If it were imported, it would likely be for track use only and there are already a number of similar offerings available.

Nevertheless, we’re glad Ford had the will to build it.
