Despite rumors of its demise, the utilitarian Mercedes-Benz G Class soldiers on into yet another model year but this time benefits from a slew of worthy updates.

While the look of the vehicle hasn’t changed much (even from the original 1979 model), the 2013 model year brings a completely revamped interior, new technological updates, and a brand new G63 AMG variant.

In the U.S. customers will be able to choose from the regular 2013 G550 model or new 2013 G63 AMG, while overseas markets receive several other options including a diesel and even a G65 AMG model packing a V-12 engine.

All models in the U.S. feature a color display and new round dials in the main instrument cluster. Other standard features include the latest COMAND infotainment system featuring mbrace2 connectivity, as well as a navigation system and internet access.

The 2013 G550 makes do with the previous model’s 5.5-liter V-8, which in its latest guise delivers 388 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to the familiar seven-speed automatic transmission.

New to the range is the 2013 G63 AMG, which gets the tuner’s latest 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 found in several other Mercedes models and in the G Class delivers 544 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. It gets an engine stop-start feature as standard as well.

The only visual changes to the exterior of the 2013 G Class are a set of LED daytime running lights positioned below the headlights, as well as revised side mirror housing. The AMG model gets unique 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers, bumpers with larger intakes, and a custom radiator grille with double louvers.

Other standard features on both models include Blind Spot Assist, the PARKTRONIC parking aid, adaptive cruise control, and a revised electronic stability system with Trailer Stability Assist and hill-hold function. As with the previous G Class, the latest model also features three electrically controlled 100-percent differential locks plus ladder frame and rigid axle characteristics.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz G Class range hits showrooms this August.
