This is the first time we’ve seen the new model with the double stripe pattern, and we must say it certainly looks good on the car.
SRT is quick to point out that this is not simply a fashion statement, and that the car above is actually a pre-production model that was recently used for dry-track stability control testing.
According to the automaker the new Viper passed with “flying colors,” which bodes well for fans clamoring to get their hands on one when sales officially start later this year.
SRT is yet to announce availability and pricing for the car, though we know that it will be available two different trim levels: base and GTS. We expect pricing of the higher-spec GTS model to start above $110k, which means we could still see a sub-$100k sticker for the bare bones model.
That would be very interesting considering the new 2013 SRT Viper is packing an 8.4-liter V-10 engine delivering 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels in a chassis that weighs less than 3,300 pounds.
All Viper models come with a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission that has been improved with a shorter throw shifter, closer gear ratios and a final drive ratio shortened to 3.55 from 3.07. This should make them more engaging to drive compared to the previous model. SRT has also admitted that it is investigating an automatic for the car, so we could see this option offered for the first time on the Viper in the near future.
Other firsts for the latest Viper include standard safety technologies such as electronic stability control and traction control. Additionally, all Vipers now come with a steering-wheel-mounted launch control switch, allowing for optimal acceleration from standing starts.
