Mercedes-Benz is introducing a facelifted version of its GLK Class compact crossover this summer and has revealed the vehicle today ahead of its world debut next month at the 2012 New York Auto Show.

The latest GLK Class, which arrives as a 2013 model, adopts fresh new styling, more standard equipment and a revised engine lineup.

The good news is that U.S. customers will no longer be limited to just one engine in the GLK as the latest 2013 model will offer both the gas-powered GLK350 and a new diesel-powered GLK250 BlueTEC.

The GLK350 packs a direct-injected 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This is enough to accelerate the vehicle from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and see it reach a top speed of 130 mph.

The GLK250 BlueTEC, meanwhile, sports Mercedes’ latest 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel rated at 190 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

Both models come with a seven-speed automatic and ECO engine stop-start function, and customers will still be able to choose from standard rear-wheel drive or optional 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. An ECO display in the instrument cluster is also new, enabling the driver to monitor how driving style impacts fuel economy.

The exterior gives the GLK an even more athletic look, with the hard edges of the previous model being softened just a little. Key off-road details, like the approach and departure angle and tall ground clearance have all been maintained, however.

Beneath its newly-designed headlamps, the GLK Class features LED daytime running lights framed in chrome. The standard automatic headlamps feature LED daytime running lights and locator lighting, while the optional Lighting Package comes with bi-xenon headlamps with active curve illumination, Active Highbeam Assist and a headlamp cleaning system.

Brushed aluminum running boards with rubber studs and a power panorama sunroof are both available as standalone options, as is an AMG Styling Package with 20-inch wheels replacing the standard 19-inch units.

Inside, designers have completely revamped the dashboard, adding new burl walnut trim, round air vents, a premium leather multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles and a 4.5-inch color display in the instrument cluster. The automatic’s gear-shift lever has also been moved to behind the steering wheel.

Standard infotainment equipment for the new GLK includes a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity and central controller with a 5.8-inch color display. Audiophiles can opt for a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system with 12 speakers, as well as a Multimedia package with a larger 7-inch display, rearview camera, enhanced voice control and the COMAND system with hard-drive navigation.

The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK Class goes on sale this summer in GLK350 trim only. The GLK250 BlueTEC arrives in showrooms early next year. Pricing and EPA-rated fuel economy figures should be announced closer to launch. Sadly, right-hand drive markets miss out as Mercedes is waiting until the launch of its next-generation GLK to implement both right and left-hand drive configurations.
