The annual “GTI Meeting at Wörthersee” is a must-attend event for VW fans throughout Europe.

Billed as “the largest GTI event in the world”, Wörthersee is also a great place for Volkswagen to roll out its latest concepts.

This year, Wörthersee attendees will get a chance to see the new Polo R WRC Street concept, which borrows styling cues from the Polo R WRC car (also on display) to emphasize the sporting nature of VW’s new Polo models, set for launch in 2013.

The Polo R WRC Street gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, pulled from the Golf GTI and rated at 217 horsepower. Aerodynamic improvements include a roof spoiler and front splitter, and the car sports a dropped ride height and a stiffer suspension. Purple wouldn’t have been our first choice for a stripe package, but then again we’re not car designers.

Billed as a road-going prototype for the FIA World Rally Championship, the newly-developed Polo R WRC is described as the “hottest Polo ever” by Volkswagen’s head of development, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg. The Polo R WRC gets a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, good for 296 horsepower and a claimed 0-62 mph time of 4.1 seconds.

Volkswagen is also showing “GTI Black Dynamic” and “GTI White Concept” cars at Wörthersee, and as the name implies, these are built around an exterior color theme. The GTI Cabriolet will be making its second Wörthersee appearance in 2012, and should hit European dealers in the second half of this year.

Don’t look for any of these models on this side of the pond, though; like the VW Scirocco which originally debuted at Wörthersee, all are likely to be forbidden fruit in the United States.
