However, despite now coming with a smaller engine, pricing has been increased on the base X3, with the 2013 X3 xDrive28i starting at $39,395 including an $895 destination charge.
This represents a $1,400 increase over the 2012 model.
The four-cylinder engine is BMW’s ‘N20’ TwinPower 2.0-liter, which thanks to turbocharging and direct-injection technologies is comparable in performance to the naturally-aspirated 3.0-liter straight-six that it replaces in the X3 xDrive28i model.
Peak output is rated at 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, which should see the X3 xDrive28i accelerate from 0-60 mph in around 6.5 seconds and easily reach its electronically limited top speed of 130 mph.
The six-cylinder X3 xDrive35i, meanwhile, continues into 2013 with a turbocharged six-cylinder. In this case, BMW’s ‘N55’ TwinPower 3.0-liter, which is rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration to 60 mph from rest is quoted at 5.5 seconds.
Pricing for this model in 2013 also sees a rise, this time an increase of just $900 to $44,495 including destination.
New features on the 2013 BMW X3 range include engine stop-start technology, a new ECO PRO mode and driving coach, plus a driver assistance package with lane departure warning. All models come with 18-inch wheels standard though buyers can opt for 19-inch wheels available in the M Sport Package.
