2012 Infiniti G37 Coupe
Technology sharing that we already know of will include the sharing of a platform for the next-generation Smart ForTwo and Renault Twingo, the sharing of several engines between the Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz brands, and the sharing of the platform underpinning the new Mercedes-Benz A and B Class models with an upcoming compact from Infiniti.
According to a new report, another platform that will be shared will be the rear-wheel drive architecture destined for the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C Class.
An inside source has revealed to Motor Trend that the C Class platform will be used by Infiniti for its next-generation G due out in late summer of 2014. Infiniti’s engineers will be making some changes to the platform, however, including lengthening the wheelbase by two inches for more interior space.
The styling of the car is said to be much more aggressive than the current model and will also adopt some elements from 2011’s Etherea concept, particularly the headlight treatment. It should also be more coupe-like in its design to give it a much more contemporary look and feel.
A year after the launch of the sedan, coupe and convertible models will be launched.
Power in the new G is expected to come from an updated VQ V-6 engine, though a four-cylinder diesel sourced from Mercedes-Benz will also be offered. The diesel, which hasn’t been confirmed for the U.S., is tipped to be the 2.1-liter four-cylinder found in various Mercedes models including the recently launched 2013 GLK250 BlueTEC. A hybrid model will also be launched using a similar powertrain to the one found in the M35h.
Finally, the source revealed details about a high-performance IPL model with 530 horsepower onboard. Designed to go up against luxury sports models like the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, the new IPL Infiniti G will feature a unique twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter V-6 engine. This engine will be manufactured alongside the Nissan GT-R’s 3.8-liter unit at the automaker’s performance center in Tochigi, Japan.
