Hot on the heels of the reveal of the new Toyota GT 86, or Scion FR-S as it’s expected to be called in the U.S., Subaru has unveiled its version of the new jointly developed rear-wheel drive sports car, the BRZ. While it's only making its official world debut alongside its Toyota sibling today at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, almost everything there is to know about the BRZ has already been revealed although there are a few new interesting tidbits.

Unique elements of the BRZ are its grille and front bumper design, headlight detailing, custom fender vents, integrated exhaust tips, and revised tail-lamps. Otherwise, it's almost identical to the GT 86, right down to its naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine.

Despite predictions the BRZ would be more powerful than its Toyota counterpart, Subaru has confirmed that its sports car will also feature a horizontally opposed ‘boxer’ engine and Toyota’s D-4S direct injection technology and with peak output capped at 197 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The engine is installed front mid-ship to create an ultra-low center of gravity--475 millimeters to be exact.

We can also confirm that the BRZ will tip the scales at just 2,689 pounds, leading to an almost ideal 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution. As for the chassis, this features MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone setup in the rear. The brakesfeature fully ventilated disks and reside within 18-inch wheels shod with 215/40R18 tires up front and 225/40R18s in the rear.

Inside, there’s a tachometer with a digitally displayed speedometer and bespoke sports seats.

Note, Subaru has also confirmed its participation in next year's Super GT Series in Japan where it will compete in the GT300 class using the new BRZ.
