In the early part of 2008 BMW first announced plans to establish a new research division called ‘Project i’, whose task would be to develop a number of solutions for a vehicle designed for congested city motoring.

The goal of Project i was never to exclusively develop one type of vehicle or another like the upcoming i3 and i8, but to come up with a range of technologies BMW could introduce across its fleet.

Turns out an all-natural hand sanitizer was one of the solutions BMW came up with in its quest to cleanse the environment.

That’s right. BMW has announced a partnership between its i division and Austrian natural cosmetics brand Susanne Kaufmann.

Their first product together will be the Purif-i hand sanitizer and moisturizer, which is claimed to be composed entirely of herbal extracts. Additionally, since it requires no water or a towel, it can be used anywhere, anytime.

With Mercedes-Benz recently launching its own perfume line, it looks like the two arch rivals are taking the battle from the showroom to the cosmetics aisle. We wonder how long it will be until others join the fray.
