June was a good month to be in luxury car sales, with almost every luxury brand reporting sales growth over June of 2011. There may be bad news on the horizon, however, as unemployment remains high and consumer confidence continues to weaken.

In terms of growth over prior year, no luxury auto brand did better than Lexus, which sold 10,247 units in June for an impressive growth of 99.7-percent over June of 2011. The heavy-hitter for Lexus was its ES 350 sedan, which sold 3,780 units on its own.

Acura, which reported sales of 15,370 units in June, came in second place with growth of 76.5-percent over prior year. Sales were fueled largely by demand for its newly-redesigned RDX crossover, although both the TSX and TL sedans sold well during the month.

Infiniti turned in an impressive performance for the month, racking up sales of 10,436 units, led by strong retail demand for both the G Series sedan and the new JX crossover. The unit sales represent a gain of 66.1-percent over prior year.

The unit sales leader for the month (at least with Mercedes-Benz yet to report sales) was BMW, which led the luxury pack with sales of 21,725 units, representing a modest gain of only 0.4-percent from June of 2011.

Rival German brand Audi continued its forecasted climb to the top of the segment, posting June sales of 12,664 units, a gain of 26-percent from last year.

Even identity-challenged luxury brand Lincoln fared well (relatively speaking) last month, posting sales of 7,544 vehicles, a gain of 2.5-percent over prior year.

Land Rover posted sales of 3,602 units, fueled largely by strong demand for the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. Compared to June of 2011, Land Rover posted gains of 14-percent.

Porsche showed significant gains in 911 and Boxster/Cayman sales, while Cayenne and Panamera sales were relatively flat. The German automaker moved 3,002 units last month, representing an overall gain of 18-percent from prior year.

Only Jaguar posted a decline in sales for the month, moving just 1,030 units for a decline of 26-percent over prior year.

Mercedes-Benz has yet to deliver June numbers, but the automaker sold 22,515 units in May, a growth of 17.8-percent.

It’s worth pointing out that some of the growth in Japanese luxury brands Infiniti, Acura and Lexus can be attributed to supply shortages in June of 2011. It will be interesting to see how the brands deliver growth through the remainder of the year.
