The RM Auctions event in Monterey is drawing closer, and one of the goodies on the block is this Corvette racer that once competed at Le Mans and Daytona.
This 1969 Chevrolet BFG "Stars And Stripes" L88 ZL-1 Greenwood Racing Corvette was raced in the 24 Hours Of Daytona, the 24 Hours Of Le Mans, and the 12 Hours Of Sebring. The flag-waving number 49 car was restored by Corvette Repair of New York.
Performance specs and features are impressive: An estimated 750 horsepower at 6,500 RPM from the 427 cubic-inch aluminum-block ZL1 engine, a Muncie four-speed close-ratio transmission, Greenwood Racing front and rear suspensions, trailing arms, antisway bars, Minilite Wheels, and period-specific NOS BFG radial tires. The bodywork of the 98-inch wheelbase car has factory L88 flares and molded plexi-head lamp covers.
The car, driven by John Greenwood, Dick Smothers, Bob Johnson and Dick Yenko, hit 215 mph at Le Mans.
Racing mods include notched rear arms, a rapid replacement radiator, quick camber adjustment, and the ZL-1 engine itself.
The sale dates for the Monterey auction are August 19 and 20, 2011.
