2000 Audi Steppenwolf Concept
Audi has long been rumored to be developing its own minicar based on Volkswagen’s Up platform, along with Skoda and possibly Seat. However, speaking with Automotive News, Rupert Stadler said: "I cannot imagine that we will have a new model below our current A1 entry-level car."
Such a decision makes sense as the new A1 is already taking Audi into new territory, mostly in terms of pricing, and an even cheaper model would place it alongside affordable mainstream brands like Chevrolet, Ford and even sister brand Volkswagen.
Instead, Stadler said that we can expect to see a new compact crossover model. "The Q family certainly still has potential. It is not yet complete," he said.
However, Stadler went on to reveal that no decision had been made on a new entry-level Q model, which is likely to be called the Q1 and share its platform with the A1 compact hatch if given the green light.
Reports on the Q1 date back to 2008 and suggest that the car could be in production by next year.
