As Buick ramps up its new-product initiative, the Volkswagen Jetta may get a new entry-level luxury competitor in the shape of the as-yet-unnamed Chinese Buick small sedan transplant. But Volkswagen will be ready, with a new version of the Jetta due in just a few days.
Volkswagen is teasing the car on its website, with the unveiling scheduled for June 15. Though the new 2011 Jetta will be based on the Mark VI Golf, it's expected to wear different styling. Borrowed from the New Compact Coupe concept, the new face will adhere to the brand-wide face while tweaking the Golf's looks with more sculptural elements to set the Jetta apart.
The car's drivetrain is expected to mirror what's available on the Golf here in the U.S., including a possible GTI variant with a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder rated at 210 horsepower. The 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine found in the current Jetta TDI will also likely be available, as will the 170-horsepower 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder. There's also a hybrid version in the works for 2012.
