GM's Renaissance Center and Tim Cook, Apple COO

Anyone that can fill in for an icon like Apple's Steve Jobs in a pinch is a person that knows how to get things done right. And now the Internet is abuzz with talk that Apple COO Tim Cook might be the next CEO at General Motors.

The news is still utterly unofficial and speculative, but as Silicon Valley Insider, the initial propagator of the talk of Cook's candidacy, it does make sense. Apple is all about maintaining an image while delivering good products, and GM desperately needs a new image to match its products.

Before you get your hopes too high for the General, however, be aware that the information comes from an anonymous tipster speaking with an insider at Spencer Stuart, the executive headhunting firm GM tasked with the search for the next CEO back in December.

If Cook is eventually picked for the job, he'll replace interim CEO Ed Whitacre. Whitacre will retain his position as Chairman, where he'll no doubt continue to stir things up among the upper ranks of GM's management.
