Sometimes a growling, heady exhaust note is just what the doctor ordered - and sometimes it's just annoying. Porsche has both situations covered with its new sport exhaust system, which allows the driver to choose the exhaust's tone with a single button press.

The new exhaust features a set of stainless-steel silencers inline with the standard dual-exhaust system. Inside each silencer is a flap that can be opened or closed by the engine's electronic control system. When the driver pushes the button to switch the exhuast into sport mode, it opens the flaps and lets more sound out.

Engine load, engine speed and road speed all interact with the electronic control system to vary the engine's exhaust note. When the desire for the more powerful exhaust sound has passed, the driver pushes the same button and it goes back to being a quiet and docile daily driver.

Pricing of the system in Europe is €1,915 ($2,487) including VAT, and it will be available as an option on all Carrera and Targa 4 models beginning in February. The base MSRP in the U.S. is $2,500, and starting in April, a Tequipment version will be available for retrofit to previous Carrera and Targa 4 models.
