None of us want to think about getting our mechanical mistresses (or masters) in situations that require insurance intervention, but we all have to pay it just in case we do--but some of us pay more, a lot more, than others. This year's 10 most expensive production cars to insure could just about pay for a third car with their premiums.

The most popular brand on this most-expensive list is Porsche, with four models of the ten. Mercedes comes in second, with three, with Audi's R8 and the Dodge Viper rounding out the top 10. Dodge does get an honorable mention for making the list twice, however, with both the convertible and coupe making it in. Clearly, the hyper-exotics aren't on this list, nor are Ferrari or Lamborghini, as the list considers only the more attainable, higher-volume production cars and their variants.

The gap between number 10 and number 1 is only a tick under $240 per year, making all of these cars very expensive to insure. And below the top 10 are another 10, separated by a mere $170 or so from 10th place. The next ten cars on the list (11-20) are dominated by Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including the CL65 AMG, S600, SL65 AMG and its Black Series cousin, and the CL63 AMG. BMW's M6 (coupe and convertible) and 760Li, plus two variants of Jaguar's XKR Supercharged round out the top 20.

Any one of these cars' insurance premiums could buy you a new Nissan Versa, but that Versa won't be able to pay for the $10,000 bumper replacement and respray on your 2010 Porsche GT2. All of these rates are calculated on the rates a 40-year-old male with a clean driving record would get.

Without further ado, here's the top 10 list, listed by make/model and average national premium:
