Ford to build only 45,000 2009 Mustangs

Ford recently celebrated production of its nine millionth Mustang but the carmaker is in no rush to add to that tally with news it will only build 45,000 examples of its iconic muscle car for the 2009 model year. This figure may seem like a lot but in just the first five months of this year Ford has already sold 44,160 Mustangs and in the same period last year it sold 64,560 units.

The Mustang is Ford’s longest-running nameplate, having been introduced on April 17 at the 1964 New York World Fair, and today represents one out of every two sports cars sold in the U.S. Sales topped 419,000 units in its first 12 months on the market, and passed the one million mark in the first two years, shattering the sales records of any single model in history.

To celebrate its 45th anniversary, Ford will offer the 2009 Mustang with a special badge, an optional glass roof and slightly updated trim, reports AutoWeek.

Although the limited production may end up costing Ford sales, the carmaker is hoping to build anticipation ahead of the launch of a facelifted model due next year.

wow.. thats a bold move.. a limited model year mustang. not a limited edition. a limited model year. that has to be a first.

I guarantee that every last one of them will sell before june of next year, regardless of the price of petrol. The glass roof and the new trim were enough to keep people buying it.. but this... wow. that 2010 model better hit the lots by july or august.

Seems like it could be a really smart move to me - are they taking a leaf out of Apple's (iPhone) book?

It will also help the dealers. No last year models sitting around when the update comes. And full profit for the 2009 models. Finally. Something done right.

yes Mustang or mustang fans are like Porsche fan. It's a winner in its class and tradition.
it should be a sell out but what about the other ranges that the mustang usually covers.
I mean this is only one version of the mustang and only one.
mustang usually covers more than that one market range, will there be anything else in the future to cover that left over range from ford.

bambam.. if the article is correct, it sounds like there will only be 45,000 mustangs in 2009. it's not an anniversary edition.. that's the entire year. 45,000.
