First look at Audi R8’s new all-LED headlights

Audi has gone one up on Lexus by offering the world’s first all-LED headlights for its new R8 sports car. Unlike the units in Lexus’ flagship LS 600h saloon, which use LED lights for the low-beam projectors, the new Audi lights use the efficient diodes for the low and high beams as well as the daytime running lights and turn signals.

Individual LEDs, of which there are 54 in each headlight, are grouped into small clusters that gave developers greater freedom for their designs as the diodes can be placed in unconventional arrangements and patterns.

Other benefits of LEDs are their much longer lifespan, more natural looking light, smaller overall size and lower power usage (50 Watts for low beam and 6 Watts for daytime runners).

I like and applaud the technology. But I ABSOLUTELY HATE daytime running lights and the complexity of this new lighting arrangements means that people won't easily be able to turn them off. Since I live in a country in which DRLs are not mandated by stupid politicians I'll order my R8 without DRLs or not at all.

If you are going to show Audi's "all-LED" headlight system, you should do some research and show the correct lighting system. The photos shown are of the Bi-Xenon lighting system. Pictures of the actual all-LED system can be seen here

Thanks Jared. By the way, the Bi-Xenons look dated next to those awesome LED lights Jared showed.

Side note: Why the heck is it when some manufacturers started using LEDs and its as if a big fuss... the technology is CHEAP, abundant, whats the hype bout those who're using it and WHY so few are using them ?
