Fiat to launch 500-based Abarth Coupe

Fiat, through its Abarth performance division, is reportedly working on a new sports coupe based on its 500 minicar to be launched sometime next year. The car will simply be called the Abarth Coupe and will join the existing Punto and 500 models in the Abarth lineup.

Due to its humble 500 underpinnings, the new Abarth Coupe will feature a FWD and front-engine layout, and most of its interior will be lifted straight from the award-winning hatchback. Styling will be unique, however, with inspiration coming from classic Abarth models of the past. One in particular is likely to be the 1959 Abarth 750 Zagato Coupe, a car built around a lightweight aluminum body and featuring a two-seater layout.

While no official specs have been released, the most likely option for the Abarth Coupe’s powerplant is a 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine with around 135hp (100kW) and 132lb-ft (180Nm) of torque. A more potent ‘esseesse’ or SS model will likely join the ranks, and this is likely to feature a 160hp (120kW) and 170lb-ft (230Nm) version of the same engine.

Some unique features of the car will be a removable targa roof, a trademark white and red colour scheme, and plenty of Abarth Scorpion logos both inside and out. Another feature will be Fiat’s Torque Transfer Control (TTC), which acts like a front limited slip differential and helps to improve traction.

Production of the new model isn’t expected to start until next year but in the meantime head over to AutoExpress, which has published a couple of computer generated renderings depicting the upcoming Abarth Coupe.

    Alfa has pushed back its re-launch in America, with that always happening we will never see its parent company.

    Alfa's been pushing back its re-launch since the moment they left. However, haven't the first 8Cs been delivered?

    Yes, but they pushed back launching other models in the States since they still have no dealer network and the way the economy is.
