New Cabrio model will be based on the sportier Megane Coupe and should arrive on the market late next year

So far this year we’ve seen the wraps come off the all-new 2009 Renault Megane five-door hatchback and the sporty three-door Coupe variant, but there are still a number of important models in the works that we are yet to see. These include a new Megane Sedan, long-wheelbase Kombi, high-performance Renault Sport or GTI Coupe, and an open-top Megane Cabrio.

We now have a preview of the Cabrio model thanks to these two new computer generated renderings. They suggest that the Cabrio will be based on the sportier Coupe model, which sits 12mm lower than the standard hatchback and features stiffer springs and dampers. However, all Megane models share the same MacPherson-type front suspension coupled with a new sub-frame and programmed deflection flexible beam in the rear.

All variants, including the Cabrio, will share the same engine lineup, which consists of two 1.6L engines developing 100hp (74kW) and 110hp (82kW) respectively, as well as a 140hp (104kW) 2.0L unit. A new TCE 130 turbocharged engine is due next year. A six-speed manual transmission will come as standard and is joined by an optional CVT automatic.

Diesel fans have five different engines to choose from, ranging from 85hp to 130hp (63-97kW). The diesel lineup will shortly be extended to include a 160hp (119kW) unit coupled with a manual gearbox and a 150hp (112kW) model mated to an automatic transmission.

The new Megane Cabrio should arrive roughly 12 months after the Coupe, which is scheduled to hit showrooms next month.
