Porsches have traditionally been built in Germany but even an exclusive marque like the Stuttgart-based sports carmaker is not immune from the forces of globalization. Already we’ve seen it move production of its Cayenne SUV to a plant in Slovakia and now there are reports that it could even start assembling vehicles in India.
Porsche is keen to expand sales in India and one way it plans to is by assembling cars locally, reports NDTV. According to the source, an official at last week’s Frankfurt Motor Show revealed Porsche would build cars in India for the local market and possibly the surrounding region as well.
If the plan goes ahead, we suspect any Indian manufactured Porsches will be assembled from imported knocked-down kits that only require final processing. The carmaker has recently set up a new office in India and will be working closely with VW, which is also expected to move production to the country.
It seems that everyting will eventually be made in the middle east.
Oh well.
I wonder when the *@#! will hit the fan. Exporting so many jobs just can’t be sustained forever, or can it?
Perhaps it has hit the fan allready. See: high risk loan crisis. Governments seem to be applying band aids to the economy but it could be like plugging the dyke with your fingers… soon you will run out of fingers and the dyke will still be leaking. I could be wrong, perhaps a service orientated economy is sustainable, but I’m skeptical.
In the end it’s probably just wealth redistribution on a global scale though, sooner or later it may even out as labour costs tend to rise with industrialization and the reason for exporting jobs will vanish. The future is probably global conglomerates with decentralized production processes. So, skeptical for the mid term, more or less relaxed on the long term.
The big question is: would you buy an Indian Porsche?
All the Boxter and Cayman models have been / are made in Finland, NOT in Germany. That picture is from Finlands plant.
Not a bad news at all. Just don’t let those lazy ass/undereducated UAW build those fine cars in America. Look at what they have done to BMW M Roadster. BMW has to move their Z production back to Germany.
“If it wasn’t for the Japanese & Germany, you’d still be driving junk”.
iam very interested do have classic cars thanks mo
I can see some disappointment at the news of Porsche moving its manufacturing to India. I only hope that the anxiety is borne out of a lack of trust in the quality of Indian worksmanship. Also, I hope that none of you are getting all fuzzy because the concept of Porsche & Indian is simply unpalatable. If it is emotion that is driving your comment, wake up ! You can’t afford to be emotional. After all, what good is your emotion if you can only admire the car while it sits pretty in the showroom, unless of course you would much rather have a German car to feed on than some food that typically money can buy. Next, the issue of quality of Indian products. Did you know that Indian engineers design and manufacture auto components for various manufacturers. Also, did you know that India is a major sourcing hub for atleast two car manufacturers. Also, did you know that Daimler has a Mercedes plan in India, and its been a while since that plant came on. Having said that, the question that would you buy an Indian Porsche is pretty much irrelevant. Why ? You will have no choice, that’s why ?
