The Lotus Elise R from Stark Automotive offers supercar-like performance for sportscar prices. Claimed figures of 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-100mph (0-160km/h) in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of around 160mph (256km/h) put it in the company of track-day specials and cars that cost far more to maintain and store than the Elise does to buy, but Stark adds its performance for relatively little expense.
With either a donor Elise or a car purchased through Stark, the process starts with a to-the-chassis strip-down of the car, which is then restored and rebuilt with parts specified by the buyer. The heart and soul of the Elise R package, however, is pure Honda. A K20A i-VTEC engine is what gives the Elise R its staggering ability.
Stark also promises the car won’t lose its streetable nature, either. Suitable for year-round use even in Britain’s wet and chilly climes, the Elise R offers what the company hopes is the ultimate performance and appearance package for the Series 1 Elise. A sampling of the extensive restoration and rebuilding work performed: full color change respray (if desired); replaced all damaged trim and seals; new fasteners in all areas; new Lotus Sport 160 wheels with road-legal track tires from Yokohama; custom-tuned DTA Fast S60 Pro ECU; six-speed K20 gearbox; a fully upgraded suspension; new upholstery; new brake discs and pads; and standard Elise boot space retained.
All of this will run £26,800 ($53,500) on the road. Providing a donor car will net a discount from that figure. All Stark cars come standard with a 12-month warranty, 12-month MOT and six months of road tax.
