Camaro postponed: will be released as a 2010 model

Despite the near-production looking cars we’ve seen running around the streets of several U.S. cities, Chevrolet has announced that the Camaro will be delayed until Q1 2009 and will be sold as a 2010 model. The coupe will arrive first, followed several months later by the convertible.

The guys who pull no punches over at The Truth About Cars dug up this little gem from Ward’s Auto, which states that Chevrolet decided to cut out a late 2008 or early 2009 arrival of the Camaro because it would have meant a very short production run of 2009 model cars before it would have to switch over to 2010 models. Now the first production run can be a full model-year.

Dealers will start taking orders later this year, but no firm date has been chosen. With production scheduled to start at GM’s Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada in February 2009 the Q1 2009 goal should be well within reach, provided ramp-up and quality control go as planned. The company projects sales of 100,000 Camaros per year.

While you’re waiting for your local dealer to start taking orders, you can check out some of our other coverage of the Camaro, which will be available in a number of variants from V6 base models to an SS V8 powered range-topper - and even a possible hybrid.

Poo-pooh-ers indeed. By the time they get the Camaro out, it’ll be obsolete.

leave it to GM. Itt take them 10 years to bring a car to market, and when it does it will take another ten years to work out the problems. Its just like they reinvented the auto and all the systems again.

The longer they wait, the worse the gas prices will hurt their sales.
Oh well, their loss, Mustang’s gain…

5cents, I was basically saying that everyone is going to say “of course a GM car got delayed a year” when in truth its only getting delayed a couple months just to give them more time to increase their stock even more so that when it does come out, they can meet demand (unlike what they did with the whole malibu debacle).

steve, where did any of that come from? if you’re talking about the time that it takes for a “proof of concept” car to make it to market, well yeah, thats always a long time. This car has been touring as a proof of concept car (read: not a ‘concept car’ which should take 1 to 2 years to arrive) since 2006, and theyre already road testing it. if toyota took this long to get a car to market you’d probably go on and on about their quality controls. the thing is, this car has been in the lime-light for a long long time. you’ve known it was coming, and like most people, you’re getting sick of hearing about it cause its still not here yet. me too. I’d much rather never hear about it again until i hear that its HERE. At least its not the dodge challenger which is 90% a dodge charger and has taken JUST as long to get here.

gus; the way I see it is, by the time this thing actually comes out, the face lifted mustang will be here with a full glass roof and ecoboost v6. this thing is going to have some tough competition.

I hadn’t thought of that, but yes, it’s competition is moving forward without it, both from Ford and Chrysler.

Wow, so I post a comment explaining the truth, and it got deleted.
The truth is not welcome here??

Anyway…..again….. The Camaro is not delayed.
Months ago they changed the model year to 2010, that’s old news.

In August 2006 when GM announced they would produce the Camaro, they stated it will begin production in late 2008, and be available for sale in 1st Quarter 2009.
    And that has not changed.
