Aston spokesman hints at possible SUV elements for new Lagonda model

Aston Martin confirmed plans at the start of this month to revive the legendary Lagonda marque for a new range of new bespoke models, the first of which is set to appear in 2012. The idea is to allow Aston Martin to reserve its own name for its sports car models like the upcoming Vantage V12 RS and One-77 supercar, and have another brand to develop models with a completely different character.

Speaking at the announcement of the brand’s revival, the CEO of the British carmaker Dr Ulrich Bez said “after my eight years with Aston Martin, four with profitability, and 16 months of independence, it’s time to think about a longer term future.”

“We have now investigated and concluded that the revival of the Lagonda brand would allow us to develop cars which can have a different character than a sports car, and therefore offer a perfect synergy. Lagonda will use a unique design language as Aston Martin does. We will take elements of DNA from the past but will be very future orientated as we are with Aston Martin. With Lagonda offering exclusive, luxurious and truly versatile products with high quality and usability and suitable for both existing and emerging markets, I believe we can be present in more than 100 countries in the world."

Next year the Lagonda brand turns 100 and to mark the occasion a new concept vehicle will be launched. While there have been no official details, many have suggested that Ulrich Bez’s figurative description that the car will be “truly versatile” hints that it could be a high-end SUV or crossover model. This would fit in with Aston’s plans to sell the new model in growing markets such as the Middle-East, Russia and China, where such vehicles are still in high demand. Aston Martins are currently available in only 32 countries, but Bez expects that Lagonda will be available in more than 100 countries.

Speaking with Car and Driver, an Aston Martin spokesperson said the first new Lagonda “wouldn’t be an SUV in the same way as a BMW X5” but that it will likely pick up elements from the Series 4 Lagonda saloon from 1987, as well as other past models.

The other good news here is that just maybe we can finally see an original design come out of them.

Did William Towns have any children that went into design?
