Jaguar Wimps Out Of Cadillac CTS-V Challenge

Last month, during a discussion with journalists about General Motors’ new “May the Best Car Win” marketing campaign, Bob Lutz laid down the challenge to any journalist to a duel with the Cadillac CTS-V to see if any comparable car could topple the Caddy.

The guys at Jalopnik were the first to accept the challenge, putting forward Wes Siler, who we would later find out would compete in a 510 horsepower 2010 Jaguar XFR.

Not so apparently. Jaguar’s PR team have reportedly backed out of the challenge, which is scheduled to take place this Thursday at the Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, N.Y.

Jaguar spokesman Stuart Schorr admitted to Jalopnik that he expected the XFR would lose to the CTS-V but said losing wasn’t the problem. Schorr went on to reveal that Jaguar is worried the brakes of the XFR won’t be able to last the necessary five laps unless their cooling was upgraded. Jaguar isn’t alone, incidentally, from backing out of the challenge. Mercedes-Benz has also put forward its concerns and has decided it will better to sit back and watch. So what now? Jalopnik will still compete using another Cadillac CTS-V as well as an all-wheel drive Mitsubishi Evo. Also on hand will be several ‘civilian’ cars, including a BMW M3, a BMW M5, an Audi RS4 and even another Cadillac CTS-V. [Jalopnik] Read More

Jaguar XF Estate Back On The Table For 2012?

Earlier this year, rumors began to emerge of a Jaguar XF Estate for the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. We already previewed the car last April, but development was thought to be stalled. Today, new reports of the project's revival are breaking and it looks like the XF Estate could be on the road by 2012.

The Estate would expand on the already highly successful XF range at its mid-cycle facelift with a roomier, more cargo-capable variant that offers an eminently more civilized alternative to a crossover or SUV--shocking, but wagons do have their strong suits.

Earlier rumors have an XF-R Estate in the works as well. With enough power and style to give even Audi's dashing RS6 or BMW's M5 Touing--both verboten in the U.S.--a run for their money, the 510-horsepower super-wagon might offer America a new perspective on wagons. The standard XF Estate is expected to share engines, and trim levels, with the XF sedan. Eager Americans ought not to count their domestic fowl before they're hatched however, as the XF-R variant might make a similar move to its German counterparts and sidestep Stateside sales. Barring such a decision, the XF Estate is shaping up to be one exciting addition to an already solid model range. [Autocar] Read More

    Rendered: 2012 Jaguar XF Estate

The thought of a luxury station wagon may seem a little odd here in the U.S. but over in Europe, and many other parts of the globe, they are all the rage, with automakers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and especially Audi all enjoying great success with their respective wagon models.

This is a trend Jaguar would like to pick on. While the now defunct X-Type Estate saw little success, due mostly to the lack of popularity of the sedan on which it was based, Jaguar is hoping to claw back some of the luxury wagon market with a new XF Estate.

This is a trend Jaguar would like to pick on. While the now defunct X-Type Estate saw little success, due mostly to the lack of popularity of the sedan on which it was based, Jaguar is hoping to claw back some of the luxury wagon market with a new XF Estate. The XF sedan has proven very popular for Jaguar that there are even considerations for a possible coupe and convertible. Not that long ago the idea of Jaguar developing so many different vehicles was unheard of but with the financial backing of new owner Tata, there’s the chance we could see the new models. This computer generated rendering gives us a preview of one the XF Estate. As the rendering suggests the Estate would sport a conventional rear-lifting tailgate and extended roofline. Another possibility is an extended wheelbase and beefed up suspension for extra load capacity, but the extra cost of reengineering the car may rule out this option. According to latest reports, the XF Estate is in the works and is due to go on sale in early 2012. This date coincides with a planned facelift for the XF, with changes such as a bolder grille being included and a new four-cylinder turbodiesel also set to appear in the XF line. [Autocar] Read More

Jaguar releases mega-gallery for 2010 XJ saloon Though the current Jaguar XJ is only about 7 years old - a pretty typical vehicle lifespan - the body styling is derivative of the same basic shape that's been around since the 1970s, causing many to think the car lacked technical sophistication despite an all-aluminum chassis and an impressive spec sheet. Though the current Jaguar XJ is only about 7 years old - a pretty typical vehicle lifespan - the body styling is derivative of the same basic shape that's been around since the 1970s, causing many to think the car lacked technical sophistication despite an all-aluminum chassis and an impressive spec sheet. Today, after several leaked images were revealed yesterday, Jaguar has released official images and information for its all-new, redesigned 2010 Jaguar XJ. Borrowing traits from the new Jaguar aesthetic first demonstrated on the XF sedan, the 2010 XJ is definitely not stuck in the past. Details reminiscent of the Aston Martin Rapide are also evident, though the XJ's long lines and expansive profile are unique enough to set the car apart at a glance. A low, sloping roofline gives the XJ a four-door coupe look, while the black D-pillar gives a 'floating roof' effect from the rear, and a huge glass sunroof lets abundant light into the cabin to help improve the sense of space and counter the low-slung roof. The rear is sure to draw both fans and critics; its vertical tail lights and tall deck are love-'em or hate-'em details. Inside, the decidedly stuffy interior of the current XJ is replaced with a much more modern cockpit featuring a pop-up transmission control interface, laser-inlaid wood trim, a leather headliner and a new instrument panel that abandons traditional dials in favor of a high-definition screen that displays all the information the driver needs. A unique feature enabled by the new high-def instrument panel is a soft red glow used to indicate performance driving modes. Under the hood, the new V8 found in the XF will be the central player, though Europeans will also get a 3.0L V6 turbodiesel. The 5.0L V8 engine will be available in a naturally-aspirated base form rated at 385hp, while a supercharged variant will pump out 470hp and an even higher-performance 510hp version for the Supersport edition will also be available. Only one transmission - a paddle-shifted six-speed auto - will be available, hustling the standard XJ to 60mph in 5.4 seconds, or slingshotting the Supersport version to the same speed in a mere 4.7 seconds. Suspension dynamics are controlled via air springs, with computer-controlled settings of Normal, Dynamic and Winter. Like its predecessor, the new XJ makes extensive use of aluminum, weighing in at a mere 3,800lb in its lightest trim or up to 4,300lb at its heaviest. That's still 500-1000lbs lighter than most of the competition. The combination of light weight and a powerful engine will make for a solid performer but also for surprisingly good fuel economy if our experience with the current-gen XJ Super V8 is any indication. The new XJ can be ordered now with sales to officially open in December for early 2010 delivery. Prices start from an MSRP of $72,500 for the base 5.0L V8, $87,500 for the XJ Supercharged and from $112,000 for the XJ Supersport.2010 Jaguar XJUnveiling of the 2010 Jaguar XJ Sedan Read More
  • Jaguar expands lineup with 470hp XF Supercharged

Jaguar expands lineup with 470hp XF Supercharged Jaguar today announced the introduction of the fourth and newest member of its acclaimed XF lineup, the 2010 XF Supercharged sedan. Joining the 4.2L and 5.0L naturally aspirated models and the range-topping XFR super-saloon in the U.S. market, the new XF Supercharged comes with a 5.0L force-fed engine pumping out a 470hp (351kW) and 424lb-ft (574Nm) of torque - a 12% increase in power over the 4.2L 2009 Jaguar XF Supercharged.

This bump in output is courtesy of the new 5.0-liter supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III engine that debuted at this year's Detroit Auto Show. However, it’s not just about more power. This bump in output is courtesy of the new 5.0-liter supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III engine that debuted at this year's Detroit Auto Show. However, it’s not just about more power. The new XF Supercharged also gets Jaguar’s latest ‘Adaptive Dynamics’ variable suspension damping system and the ‘Active Differential Control’ electronically controlled rear differential as standard. The end result is a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds – just 0.2 seconds off the pace of the 510hp (380kW) XFR. Other features include uprated ventilated disc brakes, 20in wheels, contrasting color twin needle stitching on the instrument panel and door top rolls, a unique Rich Oak veneer, a 440W Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, HD radio, and a heated steering wheel. The XF Supercharged will go on sale this October and will be priced from $68,000. As for the rest of the lineup, the 300hp (225kW) 4.2L naturally aspirated XF is priced from $52,000, the 385hp (287kW) 5.0L naturally aspirated XF Premium at $57,000 and the aforementioned XFR at $80,000. Sadly, we Americans still miss out on one other XF variant, the XF Diesel S. This super frugal sedan is limited to European markets and is powered by a 3.0L commonrail turbodiesel returning 34.5mpg (6.8L/100km) in fuel economy.2010 Jaguar XF Supercharged Read More
