Acura Announces 2011 TSX Sport Wagon To Arrive In Fall 2010

Back in August we brought you news that Acura was considering a TSX wagon for the U.S., and today, Acura has confirmed that it will indeed be bringing the car Stateside by late 2010.

Known elsewhere in the world as the Accord Euro Touring wagon, the Acura version will be called the TSX Sport Wagon. The TSX Sport Wagon will join the slightly larger 2010 Acura ZDX crossover as a new form factor for the notoriously small brand.

Adding a bit more utility to the already very good TSX sedan makes a lot of sense, especially as crossovers and their spiritual ancestors--wagons--worm they way back into the hearts of Americans.

Adding a bit more utility to the already very good TSX sedan makes a lot of sense, especially as crossovers and their spiritual ancestors--wagons--worm they way back into the hearts of Americans. Though the TSX is a notch down in size from cars like the 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon and the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate, it's premium positioning and slightly lower pricing might make it more attractive to younger buyers looking for an aspirational purchase. No details on the car have yet been revealed, but expect it to be a doppelganger for the TSX sedan, with similar or identical powertrain and options packages, including the available 201-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 280-horsepower V-6 engines. The information comes from senior manager of Acura product planning John Watts. “We’re closely, closely looking at it,” he said during a recent interview where he also suggested that younger Gen Y buyers are the target consumers. “Boomers, and [the older among] Gen X, who had wagons as kids don’t want one, but the new kids do.” With many buyers, especially in the luxury segment, downsizing from big SUVs to smaller crossovers and wagons, now may be the perfect time for Acura to launch a new TSX wagon. The V6 TSX also sports unique five-spoke 18in aluminum wheels shod with Michelin Pilot all-season tires. In addition to larger wheels, the V6 TSX is further distinguished from the four-cylinder variant with the use of a slightly revised front fascia and V6 badging. The 3.5L engine meets California's CARB LEV II ULEV emissions certification and delivers an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 18/27mpg. Remaining on sale is the 2.4L four-cylinder version. Producing 201hp and 172lb-ft of torque, the four-cylinder engine comes standard with a 6-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic. All 2010 TSX models feature a double wishbone front and multilink rear suspension system, while the new V6 model's independent front suspension receives firmer springs and revised calibration for the dual-mode suspension dampers. Like all Acura models, the new TSX features as standard a power moonroof, automatic climate control, a premium seven-speaker sound system with XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth hands-free and USB and auxiliary ports. Optional goodies include Acura’s Technology Package, which adds satellite navigation, a reversing camera, and a premium sound system.2010 Acura TSX V6 Read More

Early look at next-generation Honda Accord Euro (Acura TSX) The Honda Accord Euro (Acura TSX) is one of the most stylish and well rounded vehicles in the lower premium midsize sedan market. The latest version of the car was only introduced late last year but we already have a number of details including a preview sketch of the next model due in 2011. This will be the eighth generation of the popular nameplate, and if this sketch is anything to go by it will be the most aggressive and sportiest version yet. According to Auto Motor und Sport, where this image was sourced, the new Accord Euro will adopt more coupe-like styling, with short overhangs front and rear, and a very high waistline. The front-end will retain the broad look of the current model but will be positioned closer to the ground for a more aggressive look. The current 2.4L four-cylinder petrol engine should carry over as well as the six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. New, however, could be a range topping ‘Type-S’ model with a 2.3L turbocharged petrol engine with 260hp (194kW) mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and Super Handling AWD powertrain. Let’s hope that the U.S.-spec Acura TSX will also get this exciting performance option.2009 Acura TSX2008 Honda Accord Euro Tourer and sedan Read More
  • Acura forges ahead with tier 1 luxury plans, NSX could be revived

Acura forges ahead with tier 1 luxury plans, NSX could be revived Apart from Lexus, Japanese luxury brands still pale in comparison to their German rivals in terms of the number of models they produce and the prices they can command. Overall image in the marketplace and status on the street have likewise proven difficult to develop. That's why Acura is making a hard push specifically to boost its image and achieve 'tier 1' luxury carmaker status.

The Acura plan for becoming top-tier doesn't focus on the cars, however. "Being a premium luxury brand is not just about product. It's the way dealers handle customers. That's why Acura is making a hard push specifically to boost its image and achieve 'tier 1' luxury carmaker status. The Acura plan for becoming top-tier doesn't focus on the cars, however. "Being a premium luxury brand is not just about product. It's the way dealers handle customers. You've got to earn your way into the segment. You don't necessarily have to have a $90,000 sedan to get there," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co. in an interview with Automotive News. But that doesn't mean that new, better cars aren't part of the plan. In fact, the door remains open on whether the NSX will eventually see production. The car's development is "mostly done" according to Colliver, and that means it would be a quick move to market if given the green light. The reasoning behind dropping the NSX plan in the first place was largely centered around the weak economy and Honda's plans to cut costs. If the market turns around, there's no reason not to bring the NSX out of mothballs. More every-day cars will be part of the brand push as well. Acura previously announced its intent to move toward tier 1 status at a dealer conference last year, and has since been working toward that with its new model run. The first of these new models include the RL and TSX sedans, plus the new - though oft-maligned - 2009 TL. If Acura is really serious about competing with brands like BMW and Mercedes it will also likely need to more premium options such as RWD powertrains and high-output engines - both of which make a strong argument for revival of the NSX program. The next model likely to come from Acura won't be a RWD sedan or a next-gen supercar, however. Instead, it is likely to be a mid-sized crossover, fitting between the current RDX (read our review here) and MDX.2009 Acura TLAcura RL 092009 Acura TSX Read More
  • Acura's TSX diesel faces indefinite delay

Acura's TSX diesel faces indefinite delay Diesel-loving fans of mid-range Japanese luxury sedans are mourning today, because the latest reports are indicating the long-awaited 2009 Acura TSX fitted with a 44mpg diesel engine will be delayed for an unknown period of time.

It doesn't appear that the engine itself has been killed, rather, just the application in a North American Acura TSX - though no other U.S. cars are tipped to get the car yet. The Honda Pilot or Odyssey would both be logical choices, as would the Accord, but none seem like the appropriate vehicle for launch of such an engine, despite earlier reports that the Odyssey would be the first with the new diesel.

The Honda Pilot or Odyssey would both be logical choices, as would the Accord, but none seem like the appropriate vehicle for launch of such an engine, despite earlier reports that the Odyssey would be the first with the new diesel. The reasoning behind the report, according to NextAutos is the i-DTEC engine's failure to pass emissions testing that would allow the car to be 50-state legal. As with any such expensive technology, being able to sell in all 50 states is key to success, especially since the states with the harshest emissions laws are typically also the largest target markets - i.e. California and much of the northeast U.S. In place of the torquey and inherently driveable i-DTEC engine, Acura is reportedly speeding up work for a V6 TSX, but it won't likely be able to deliver the combination of fun and efficiency a typical diesel turns out.2009 Acura TSX Read More
