    Rendered: 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan Facelift

The Volkswagen Tiguan has only been in production for a little over two years but a facelift for the compact SUV is planned. The changes are designed to bring the styling of the Tiguan in line with the rest of Volkswagen family. Other models getting the same corporate styling treatment include the Phaeton flagship sedan and the next-generation Touareg SUV.

This latest computer-generated rendering gives a good indication as to what the final version may look like when it hits the streets next year. The powertrain lineup will also likely be revitalized, with a range of more fuel-efficient engines introduced in line with more stringent fuel economy and emissions regulations. A hybrid variant may also be introduced, though its release wouldn’t be for several years still and possibly not until the launch of the second-generation of the model. Meanwhile, expect to see the facelifted Tiguan debut late next year as a 2011 model. Read More

  • J.D. Power APEAL: Porsche tops rankings for 5th year straight

J.D. Power APEAL: Porsche tops rankings for 5th year straight Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout - APEAL - is how J.D. Power measures the 'gratification' a car owner experiences with each new model on the market. For the fifth year running Porsche took top honors, but several trends in the market show a wide range of improvements.

First up: American carmakers have closed the gap on their import counterparts. In 2007, domestics fell 27 points short of imports, while in 2008 that shrunk to 15 points. This year there's just 5 points between domestics and imports, reflecting the huge improvement in design and build quality of American vehicles.

“Consumers have a great array of appealing vehicles to choose from by both domestic and import brands,” said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. Underscoring the improvement of the American brands is the overall industry improvement. The average score across all models in 2009 is up 9 points from 2008 to 779. A large part of that increase is attributed to a boost in owner satisfaction with fuel economy, according to Sargent. “Although lower fuel prices and the switch to smaller vehicles have undoubtedly helped, there are also many individual vehicles that have made strong improvements in fuel economy ratings,” said Sargent. “For example, the Ford F-150, Cadillac Escalade, Volkswagen Jetta and redesigned Dodge Ram have all made major strides in owner satisfaction with fuel economy through the introduction of more efficient powertrains.” The Germans also did well - as usual - in the APEAL rankings for 2009. Beyond Porsche's first-place finish, Volkswagen took home four category awards for the CC, GTI, Passat and Tiguan. Mercedes-Benz nabbed two of its own for the S-Class and SLK-Class. The APEAL results are built on owner evaluations of more than 90 vehicle attributes, with responses gathered between February and May 2009 from more than 80,900 purchasers and lessees of new 2009 model-year cars and trucks who were surveyed after the first 90 days of ownership. • VW considering upgraded R-line models for U.S.

VW considering upgraded R-line models for U.S. Volkswagen is in the process of developing some hot new models as a part of its performance-oriented 'R-line' range of models, but so far not all of these models have been confirmed for U.S. sale. VW, however, is considering whether or not it’s worth bringing the Tiguan R-Line, as well as certain other R-Line models to the U.S., but for now no decision has been made yet.

Similar to Audi’s S line range of performance accessories, VW’s R-line includes several different exterior and interior accessories for owners who want to customize their cars. Until now, the “R” label was reserved for high-performance cars such as the Golf R32 or the new Passat R36. But thanks to the new R line, the rest of the VW range can get that sporty look and feel without the associated costs of the more expensive R models. A VW spokesman revealed to Edumnds that while "the R Line Tiguan is under consideration" for a U.S. introduction, the company is "also looking at other R models" but that for the time being everything was still "in the investigation stage". R-Line models are constructed by VW’s 'Individual' branch, a team of engineers and designers that focus on making special models. In the case of the Tiguan R-Line, which should be hitting certain European markets within the next few months, the R-Line variant will feature a front splitter, larger wheels and a small rear spoiler, as well as a custom sports steering wheel and a smattering of 'R' logos.Volkswagen unveils Tiguan R-Line SUV Read More

Will it bend? IIHS reveals first round of tests under new roof rating system Crash testing brand-new vehicles may rub the Puritan ethic the wrong way, but it's the only sure way to find out just what a car is capable of in terms of protecting its occupants. Today a new round of testing by the IIHS reveals how the first batch of small SUVs holds up under new roof-strength standards.

Previous tests adhered to the NHTSA's roof-strength standard of 2.5 times the vehicle's weight. Now the IIHS has boosted its standard for selection as a Top Safety Pick to a full four times the vehicle's weight with a maximum crush of 5 inches.

Crash testing brand-new vehicles may rub the Puritan ethic the wrong way, but it's the only sure way to find out just what a car is capable of in terms of protecting its occupants. The new results show only 4 of the 12 small SUVs tested in this round yielded top ratings: the Subaru Forester, Honda Element, Jeep Patriot and Volkswagen Tiguan. Second-tier SUVs included the Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Stepping down a notch further, the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape rated 'marginal' on the IIHS' four-level scale, while the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson rated 'poor' - perhaps explaining where the Korean carmakers is saving some of its money. The 'Good', 'Acceptable', 'Marginal' and 'Poor' ratings correspond to the roof supporting at least 4, greater than 3.25, greater than 2.5, and less than 2.5 times the vehicle's weight respectively. It's worth mentioning, however, that the IIHS' new standard isn't official. In fact, the NHTSA has been famously slow in adopting new roof crush standards. Part of the reason is the projected expense to the industry - right now is not the time to throw another burden on the struggling carmakers - but part of the reason is also that even substantial improvements in roof strength will have little actual effect on the number of rollover-related deaths each year. A consumer advocate safety group called Public Citizen is even calling for a complete revamp of the way the tests are done - rather than a static test like that done by the NHTSA and IIHS, they would have a 'dynamic' test - one more closely simulating an actual rollover. The IIHS on the other hand thinks that its decision to jump up from the 2.5 times vehicle weight ratio required by the NHTSA to the new 4 times vehicle weigh factor would reduce casualties by 50%. That's a strong claim, and the new test is one that the IIHS expects to significantly reduce the numper of Top Safety Picks it issues each year. Currently 73 cars bear that honor. Read More
  • B&B Tuning gives the Volkswagen Tiguan a little more bite

B&B Tuning gives the Volkswagen Tiguan a little more bite Volkswagen's Tiguan SUV may not be designed for performance, but that hasn't stopped German tuners B&B conducting an extensive tuning program on the compact off-roader. With the range-topping Tiguan fitted out with all of B&B's modifications, customers are looking at a 300hp (225kW) SUV with around 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque.

The first stage of tuning for the 1.4L TSI variant of the Tiguan starts at €998 and sees the SUV's power rise by almost one-third - from 150hp (112kW) to 190hp (142kW) - while peak torque grows from 177lb-ft (240Nm) to a more impressive 207lb-ft (280Nm).

Another €500 will see the benefits of the first... Another €500 will see the benefits of the first stage of tuning along with a new, revised injection system and modified air intakes increase the output to 200hp (150kW) and 221lb-ft (300Nm) of torque. If that still isn't enough, then B&B can install a new turbocharger and intercooler that together increase power to 220hp (164kW) and 236lb-ft (320Nm) of torque at a cost of €5,998. Meanwhile, for those with the 2.0L TFSI engine already in their Tiguan, the level one package takes output to 220hp (164kW) and 250lb-ft (340Nm) of torque, while the level two package increases both power and torque by 20 units. With the new turbocharger and intercooler that comes with the level three package, the 2.0 TFSI Tiguan will be outputting up to 300hp (225kW) and 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque. The diesel variants of the Tiguan are also customizable, with the 2.0 TDI engine being modified to output up to 220hp (164kW) and 310lb-ft (420Nm) of torque. Besides engine tuning, B&B is also offering an aerodynamic package to make the Tiguan look more aggressive and sporty. This involves 14 pieces of aero kit being bolted to the SUV, as well as custom allow wheels that go up to 20in. A sports suspension system also lowers the car by 40mm, improving handling, and custom sports exhaust systems give the car a more potent rumble. Read More
