SsangYong, on the brink of collapse, has revealed a pair of new concept vehicles at the Seoul Motor Show, previewing a new production model the company will hopefully release before the year is out. The latest show cars are an evolution of last year’s striking C200 crossover concept vehicle and are described as “almost production-ready”. Expected to carry the C200 name, SsangYong’s latest crossover concept has been styled by Giugiaro’s legendary ItalDesign studio and is about the same size as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V – two of its prime competitors. SsangYong calls the C200 a CUV, or Compact Urban Vehicle. The vehicle differs from current SsangYong models in that it uses monocoque construction to ensure a passenger car look, feel and comfort. The platform is adaptable, and the chassis can be used for FWD and AWD applications in both cars and SUVs. Modern features of the newly developed chassis include aluminum suspension components and latest electronic stability control and suspension management systems. Power for the Eco version (green) comes from an advanced 2.0L diesel engine that is rated at 175hp (131kW) and matched to a new six-speed automatic transmission. The stealthed C200 Aero gets a choice of the Eco's diesel or a 1.8L turbo four-pot good for about the same power output. Also on show at the Seoul event is new diesel-hybrid version of SsangYong’s Kyron SUV. The diesel hybrid technology applies an electric motor to an advanced direct-injection diesel engine, with a high-voltage battery supplying additional power. A ‘Torque Split Device’ (TSD), independently developed by SsangYong, is also applied to combine or cut off the power of the motor to provide seamless switching between the vehicle’s dual power sources or combine them on demand. Last year SsangYong said that tests had shown improvements in fuel efficiency of around 25% in comparison to existing vehicles of the same class. In terms of emissions, there was a reduction of around 10% in nitrogen oxide and around 15%in particulates. No word on a release date has been mentioned.SsangYong C200 Aero and Eco Concepts Read More

Despite the attractive new C200 crossover concept debuted at last year's Paris Motor Show, the successful Rexton production SUV and the new-for-2008 Chairman W luxury sedan, South Korea's SsangYong has revealed that it is entering court receivership to avoid being forced into bankruptcy. The global slump in car sales hit the carmaker hard in every market, pushing down share values by 77% over the last 12 months. The company had previously cut wages by 30%, reduced output and received a $45 million cash injection from China's SAIC, which owns 51% of SsangYong. Even with those steps taken, it wasn't enough to keep the company's plummeting sales from dragging it into danger of bankruptcy. In a statement to the press the company said, "SsangYong decided to file for court receivership to deal with an urgent liquidity crisis and to transform itself into a company with sustainable growth." The latest twist is that Russian carmaker Sollers is now seeking to buy the rights to produce several SsangYong vehicles and is also looking to take over South Korean carmaker’s components base, Reuters reports. Sollers already holds licenses to produce SsangYong's Rexton II and Kyron SUVs in Russia, but plans to expand into other markets as well. Part of SsangYong's problem is that it competes in many global markets throughout Europe and Asia where more established brands that ate into their usual customer base by chopping prices as sales slowed. Without the ability to lower prices further or compete on a brand-to-brand basis, SsangYong has taken the financial hit on the chin. Federal aid from the state-owned Korea Development Bank could be in the cards, but is predicated on new cash injections from SAIC. That may not happen, however, as SAIC may take the receivership as an opportunity to lessen or even liquidate its interest in SsangYong to help improve its own financial situation.SsangYong C200 Concept Read More
  • Spy shots: Roewe SUV based on the SsangYong Kyron

Spy shots: Roewe SUV based on the SsangYong Kyron We haven’t heard much about Chinese carmaker Roewe since the launch of the 750 sedan back in 2006. Roewe is a subsidiary of fellow Chinese carmaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), and initially started selling vehicles built from old Rover designs – the 75 sedan and 25 hatchback specifically.

However, Roewe will soon be adding a new SUV model to its lineup as revealed by these latest spy shots. While the exterior of the vehicle is mostly unique, much of the design is shared with the SsangYong Kyron SUV on which it is based. However, Roewe will soon be adding a new SUV model to its lineup as revealed by these latest spy shots. While the exterior of the vehicle is mostly unique, much of the design is shared with the SsangYong Kyron SUV on which it is based. Compared to the Kyron, there is a completely new front-end, a slightly revised rear side window, and a new tailgate and tail-lamp assembly. The roof mounted spoiler is common to both vehicles. Engines are likely to be the same as in the Kyron, meaning a 2.0L diesel engine with 141hp and a 2.7L diesel with 165hp should be on offer. Both will be available with an automatic gearbox, as well as the option of either two-wheel or four-wheel-drive. While the chances of the new Roewe ever being sold in the United Stated are next to nil, there is a possibility that it could be sold in Europe branded as a MG. However, no official statement has been made yet and the people behind the rejuvenated MG brand, also owned by SAIC, is already having enough trouble getting the new TF LE500 Roadster into showrooms. Expect the Roewe SUV to hit showrooms in China in the first half of next year.Roewe SUV spy shots Read More

Ssangyong showed the first fruits of its relationship with Shanghai Automotive Industries Group (SAIC) at the Paris Motor Show today, signalling the start of a major product offensive set to take place over the next five years. The new concept vehicle is a compact crossover called the C200 and it is just the first of 20 new models from the South Korean manufacturer currently in the works. It is the first monocoque-bodied car ever produced by the South Korean company, and the first with front-wheel drive. Ssangyong plans to use this architecture for new sedan models as well as hatchbacks. Its current range consists mostly of SUV and commercial vehicles. The C200 has been styled by Giugiaro, whose ItalDesign styling house is working closely with Ssangyong on new models. The concept vehicle features an AWD layout and a 2.0L petrol engine. Ssangyong is yet to announce when the production version of the C200 will go on sale and in which markets. Rated at 175hp (130kW) it won't be a barnstormer, but it should provide for more than adequate city driving. Being designed as an urban crossover, that's about all it needs. The six-speed automatic transmission reportedly sends power from the four-pot mill to all four wheels, but in what percentage isn't yet announced. There is likely to be some degree of Rover content in some of the new cars. Ssangyong’s parent company SAIC is now producing cars based on old Rover platforms and engines. Some of the new models planned for Ssangyong will be built on these older Rover platforms – effectively making them Giugiaro-styled Rovers.SsangYong C200 Concept Read More
