And now the car that helped Carroll Shelby build his name and legend - the 1965 CSX2601 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe – has been sold at auction at this weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California. The car was recently auctioned at the 22nd Dana Mecum Original Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis, Indiana in May, but didn't sell. It was expected to bring between $10 million and $15 million but in the end bidding stopped at ‘just’ $7.25 million, making it the most expensive American car ever sold at auction. “Many vintage race cars have a strong American racing history to share – including this vehicle’s sister car CSX 2299 – but no car can claim a finer race hour than the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe CSX2601,” said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auction. “The legacy of its World Manufacturer’s Championship win stays with us more than four decades later, reminding us of one the proudest moments in U.S. race history and a competitive spirit of victory against all odds.” The Daytona Cobra Coupe was also licensed for the road, however - at one point the CSX2601 car was owned by a North Dakota businessman who - perhaps appropriately - owned a string of gas stations. He used the car to drive the daily 300mi trip to collect receipts. For those who would like a taste of the experience but don't have the cash for an original, check out the Shelby-approved Superperformance copy here. Read More

The company has now launched its long-awaited ‘CSX 9000’ series Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe MKII with a number of improvements, upgrades and new features. The new model will be allocated CSX9000 series chassis numbers and will come complete with a Shelby-issued MSO certificate and Chassis tag. Shelby reveals 725hp Super Snake package for Ford Mustang GT500 Following the unveiling of the new 2010 Ford Mustang GT500 back in January, it was only a matter of time until long time Ford tuner and motorsports company Shelby Automobiles released its latest iteration of the extreme Super Snake package. The highly modified car has now been revealed, with a striking blue version making its debut this week at the Mid America Ford and Team Shelby Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Starting with the GT500 Coupe donor car, Shelby adds a new supercharger to the 5.4L DOHC V8 and boosts power up to 725hp (540kW). Other modifications include an upgraded intercooler and radiator, a cold air intake, and a high-flow JBA exhaust system. A milder 630hp (470kW) version, which replaces the JBA exhaust with a Borla cat-back unit, is also available. Handling improvements come courtesy of a Ford Racing suspension with adjustable dampers, stiffer springs, thicker antiroll bars, a front strut tower brace and custom 20in Super Snake wheels shod with Pirelli P-Zero tires. Stopping power comes from Baer six-piston front calipers with cross drilled and ventilated discs. To ensure the car stands out from the crowd when off the track, Shelby’s engineers have also fitted a new hood with an oversized scoop and vents, racing stripes, rear quarter window scoops, and carbon-fiber splitter and side sills. Inside, the headrests feature embroidered Shelby logos and carbon-fiber faced gauge faces. Pricing for the Super Snake package starts at $29,495 for the 630hp (470kW) model and $33,495 for the 725hp (540kW) kit, which includes installation at Shelby Automobiles’ Las Vegas facility or at a Shelby authorized workshop. The first customer cars will be modified this August. Anyone not willing to buy a new GT500 Mustang, let alone the Super Snake upgrade, can opt for the less expensive Shelby SR package based around the previous 2005 to 2009 Mustang GT. Peak output of this model stands at 550hp (405kW) thanks to a Ford Racing supercharger and Borla exhaust. Other modifications include an Eibach suspension kit, lightweight 18in aluminum wheels, and a set of Baer six-piston performance brakes all ‘round.2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Read More

Now Exotic Auto Restoration, based out of California, is allowing car enthusiasts to bring the legend of Le Mans to their own driveway. Based on the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe built by Superformance and also designed by Peter Brock, the Le Mans Edition has been upgraded in the spirit of the original race car. This particular model is based around the design of the Daytona Coupe that won in its class in the Le Mans 24 Hour race back in 1965. Exotic Auto Restoration, however, has added a few unique elements, both inside and out. These include Group 5 fender flares front and rear, wider 18in wheels and tires, Bilstein shocks and H&R springs, billet aluminum top and side hood louvers, Alcantara trim, aircraft-style toggle switches, a suede Momo steering wheel, and “Le Mans Edition” gauges. Customers can choose from a variety of engines based on the Ford 351 Windsor block. Powering this particular Daytona Coupe Le Mans is a Roush 402R V8 producing 530hp (395kW) and 515lb-ft (697Nm) torque and mated to a Tremec T56 6-speed transmission. In addition, a track-oriented version is also available. Only six will be built (two have been pre-sold, leaving four available) in this configuration to commemorate the six original race cars, each featuring an authentic Shelby-built V8. These cars will be powered by a more potent V8 engine with 560hp (418kW) and 530lb-ft (718Nm) of torque on tap. Incidentally, one of the original Daytona Coupes, the CSX2601 that won the FIA GT World Championship in 1965, will go on auction on the 15th of this month and is expected to bring a record price for a car sold in the U.S.Gallery: Shelby Daytona Coupe Le Mans Edition Read More

Enthusiasts from all over the world now have a chance to actually own this piece of automotive history as the actual record-breaking car is up for sale on eBay. Being only one of 26 cars in 123 years to hold the record, the Ultimate Aero TT joins a special list of cars that include the 1932 Duesenberg SJ, 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, 1986 Porsche 959, 1990 Lamborghini Diablo, 1994 McLaren F1, and of course the 2005 Bugatti Veyron. This particular car is a 2007 model and is finished in ‘Palladium’ silver, matched with a black Alcantara interior. Other goodies include satnav, a 10-speaker stereo, reverse camera, and a 1183hp (882kW) twin-turbo V8 powerplant. 2010 GT500 joins two Mustang Concepts on block at Barrett-Jackson The facelifted and sleeker 2010 Ford Mustang is the talk of the web - at least when they're not talking about the new Camaro, but the pair of concepts that kicked off the previous generation of Mustangs - both coupe and convertible - will be rolling onto the auction ramp at the next Barrett-Jackson event in Palm Beach, Florida.

They look a lot like their production children, but with a hand-built show-car gleam that's impossible to match in a series-built vehicle. Speaking of the convertible's history, Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson, said, "This car began with a significantly modified Ford Thunderbird rear-wheel-drive architecture. The platform was sectioned to achieve the proper proportion and the front-end geometry is all original. This is truly a piece of history that represents the transition to an entirely new Mustang." Also taking the stage will be the first 2010 Mustang GT500 - and if that gives you deja vu, no, you're not crazy. It's the same car that was supposed to be sold at the Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale in January, but was rescheduled due to Carroll Shelby's being under the weather. The sunny climes of Palm Beach should prove much more conducive to good health and good sales anyway.2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Read More
