Jaguar unwraps Police pursuit XF for the UK We've all seen the odd supercar in police livery, but it's another thing entirely when the police are actually considering buying fleets of one of the market's highest-rated luxury vehicles. That's exactly what’s happening in the UK as Jaguar has just released a high-performance police pursuit version of its popular XF saloon.

Based on the standard Diesel S model, which isn't sold in the U.S., the Police pursuit XF gets the usual visual upgrades - lights, paintwork, upgraded electronics - while keeping the standard 3.0L V6 diesel engine rated at 271hp (202kW) and 440lb-ft (595Nm) of torque. "Police forces are looking for vehicles that represent value for money, have good environmental credentials and deliver the power and performance required of a pursuit vehicle," said Geoff Cousins, UK Managing Director for Jaguar Cars. The Police-spec Jaguar XF manages a thrifty 35mpg (US) and emissions of 179g CO2 per kilometer. But it's also got to be quick, or the baddies will get away, right? "We hope that with this amount of torque on tap – and a 0-60mph time of 5.9 seconds, we will meet and exceed the exacting standards of any Police Officer driving this car." said Cousins. Right now there are no confirmed plans of any force to purchase the car, but it is being evaluated all over the UK. Retail pricing in the UK starts at £36,900 ($58,925) for the Jaguar XF Diesel S, but the pricing of the Police model hasn't been disclosed.Jaguar XF Diesel S2010 Jaguar XF Diesel S Police pursuit demonstrator Read More
  • UK speed camera chief banned for speeding at over 100mph

UK speed camera chief banned for speeding at over 100mph A special kind of justice was meted out in Britain on Wednesday, when Tom Riall, CEO of Serco - a speed camera supplier - was busted for driving more than 30mph (48km/h) above the speed limit. A court heard his case, fined him $450 and banned him from the road for six months.

It might seem like a harsh penalty, but the UK takes speeding seriously in general, and Riall, of all people, should be aware of the dangers. "I accept the decision of the court. I recognize that speeding is not acceptable and regret what I did," Riall told CNN.

The best part of the story: Riall wasn't caught by one of his own speed cameras, or any speed camera at all... The best part of the story: Riall wasn't caught by one of his own speed cameras, or any speed camera at all - instead, he was caught the old fashioned way: by a patrol car. While it's not proof that cameras are for revenue and actual police officers are for safety, it does go a long way toward illustrating the importance of having a watchful eye behind the ticket-writing power. Serco is more tolerant of Riall's antics than the court was however. Riall will get to keep his job, but he will have to provide his own driver to get to work. Read More
  • NYPD chooses Nissan Altima as first hybrid patrol car

NYPD chooses Nissan Altima as first hybrid patrol car Government fleets have been among the first to go green in a big way, exceeded perhaps only by some private sector firms. The latest government agency to take up the environmental banner is the New York Police Department (NYPD), which today deployed 40 Nissan Altima Hybrids in its fleet.

The cars will include 18 marked vehicles and 22 unmarked. They will patrol and serve throughout the New York City area, both in larger, more open precincts and in some of the most congested urban precincts in the country.

They will patrol and serve throughout the New York City area, both in larger, more open precincts and in some of the most congested urban precincts in the country. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was enthusiastic about the benefits of the hybrids, saying, “These new patrol cars will help fulfill the PlaNYC goal of reducing City government’s carbon footprint. Through savings in fuel, these Altimas can quickly cover their additional cost, from then they will save taxpayers money – another example of how going green is good for our environment and our pocketbooks.” The NYPD has already used some hybrids among its parking enforcement fleet, but the Nissan Altima Hybrids are the first to be used as regular police cars. The Altima Hybrid was chosen because of its low cost and godo fuel performance - it costs just $1,500 more than a standard police-spec Chevrolet Impala and delivers 35mpg to the Impala's 16mpg. After a year of in-fleet testing, the NYPD will evaluate whether they should add more to the fleet or search for a different solution. Read More
  • Pontiac G8 may live on as police squad car

Pontiac G8 may live on as police squad car General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson has confirmed that the Holden-sourced G8 will die out along with its adopted Pontiac brand at the end of 2010, but the sporty sedan may live on in the U.S. at the hands of local police squads around the country. The G8 is essentially a rebadged Holden Commodore sedan and was recently spotted outside the Aussie division’s headquarters in Port Melbourne, Victoria, draped in full Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) livery.

This suggests that Holden is working on a separate U.S. export program for the G8 as a police squad car. GoAuto is reporting that up to 40,000 Commodores could be shipped to the U.S.... GoAuto is reporting that up to 40,000 Commodores could be shipped to the U.S. annually for police service, where the cars would be badged as Chevrolets. If the program proves successful, there is a chance that the cars will also be exported to Canada, the UK and the Middle East. The car spotted outside Holden’s headquarters is actually a LAPD prototype model produced by the National Safety Agency (NSA) in Australia. It was co-developed with the LAPD and has since been doing the rounds at various international police presentations. The NSA is currently in talks with nine separate U.S. law enforcement jurisdictions, which together represent a fleet of up to 40,000 vehicles a year. Most are interested in finding a suitable replacement for the aging Crown Victoria, which Ford builds in a run of 60,000 units per year for various jurisdictions. Later this year, NSA will send two of the prototypes to the U.S. for testing but things are still in the early stages and any deal could still be years away. Read More

Video: Carbon Motors unveils the E7 purpose-built police car Carbon Motors will be using the nine-city 2008 Pure Justice tour of the U.S. as an avenue for unveiling its all-new E7 purpose-built police car.
The E7 hasn't even secured its final name yet - Carbon Motors will be relying on the law enforcement community to choose a name for the vehicle ahead of production. Nevertheless, the car is looking more like a real product that could actually come to market, and judging by the reception of the police community, the vehicle will be on at least some city streets in the near future.

Nevertheless, the car is looking more like a real product that could actually come to market, and judging by the reception of the police community, the vehicle will be on at least some city streets in the near future. The tour to promote the car kicked off in Chicago next Monday, October 14, offering the first public glimpse of the car. The reveal at the 115th International Association of Police Chiefs convention today gives the best view of the car yet, thanks to the new video of the car, which shows it inside and out in real-world trim. The E7 is still just a prototype at this point, though it is no longer just a computer rendering, which is a step in the right direction. Designed as a completely unique and specific tool for law enforcement agencies, Carbon Motors plans to outfit the E7 with a 300hp (224kW) 3.0L turbodiesel engine with 420lb-ft (568Nm) of torque and RWD. A six-speed automatic will handle shifting duties, while a McPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear with self-leveling shocks give the car real handling potential. Despite being diesel-powered, the car won't be pokey - Carbon Motors claims a 0-60mph (96km/h) time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 155mph (250km/h). Braking from 60mph (96km/h) is handled in 125ft (38m) and lateral grip is a claimed 0.85g. It will also be rather fuel-efficient, rated at an estimated 28-30mpg (7.8-8.4L/100km).Carbon Motors E7Carbon Motors E7 revealed at 115th IACP Convention Read More

The latest LP560-4 was donated by Lamborghini at a ceremony today and will be used for patrol duty on the motorways of central and southern Italy, as well as on emergency medical transport detail. No changes are made to the mechanical package, but the interior is fitted with an advanced video monitoring system, a GPS data logger, radar guns, a digital video-hook up that can transmit live images to the squad room, a gun holster, police radio, and a ‘Paletta’ hand-held stop sign. Just like its predecessor, the new LP560-4 Polizia will also be used outside of Italy and is scheduled to make a number of public appearances in the United States. The previous Gallardo made its way to New York to join the Columbus Day parade back in 2005, and the latest LP560-4 should make a similar appearance next year. We’re sure most American law enforcers, accustomed to driving boring Crown Vics, will be queuing to step into the Lamborghini squad car. While you may be thinking that an exotic like the LP560-4 is a poor choice for daily patrol duties, the previous Gallardo is proof of the high reliability of modern Lamborghinis. Since 2004, Rome’s police force has had the first-generation Gallardo in regular police service. The car has since clocked nearly 87,000 miles of patrol duty and rarely missed a day of service. Named for its 560hp (418kW) output and 4WD powertrain, the V10-powered LP560/4 will accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 203mph.Lamborghini Gallardo LP-560 /4 PoliziaLamborghini Gallardo LP560/4 Polizia The latest in high performance car news. // By use of this code snippet, I agree to the Brightcove Publisher T and C // found at http://corp.brightcove.com/legal/terms_publisher.cfm. var config = new Array(); /* * feel free to edit these configurations * to modify the player experience */ config["videoId"] = null; //the default video loaded into the player config["videoRef"] = null; //the default video loaded into the player by ref id specified in console config["lineupId"] = null; //the default lineup loaded into the player config["playerTag"] = null; //player tag used for identifying this page in brightcove reporting config["autoStart"] = false; //tells the player to start playing video on load config["preloadBackColor"] = "#FFFFFF"; //background color while loading the player /* do not edit these config items */ config["playerId"] = 1873832374; config["width"] = 510; config["height"] = 550; createExperience(config, 8); Read More
