A total of 31 cars make up the list of candidates for the 2010 WCOTY category, while 15 cars make up the list for the 2010 PCOTY category. Now in their seventh year, the World and Performance Car of the Year awards are an independent global accreditation to name the best new car on the market, as selected by a voter group made up of established automotive journalists from around the globe. To be eligible, a car has to be in production and sold in at least five countries and on two continents, which meant many American manufactured cars didn't make the list. The final winners will be picked by a team of 45 judges and announced during the 2010 New York Auto Show in April. Also running once again for next year’s event are the additional World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards. This year, the Volkswagen Golf MkVI took out the WCOTY award, while the mighty Nissan GT-R supercar took out the PCOTY title. 2010 World Car of the Year candidates: Audi Q5 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo BMW X1 BMW Z4 Buick LaCrosse / Allure Cadillac SRX Chevrolet Camaro Chevrolet Cruze Citroën C3 Picasso Honda Insight Hyundai Genesis Coupe Hyundai i20 Infiniti QX Jaguar XJ Kia Cerato Koup / Forte Kia Sorento Kia Soul Lexus HS250h Lexus RX Mazda3 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Mitsubishi Outlander Nissan 370Z / 370Z Roadster Nissan Cube Nissan Patrol Peugeot 3008 Porsche Boxster / Cayman Porsche Panamera Renault Scenic Subaur Legacy / Outback Toyota Prius 2010 Performance Car of the Year candidates: Aston Martin V12 Vantage Audi R8 V10 Audi S4 Limousine / Avant Audi TT RS Coupe / Roadster BMW 335i Performance Sedan BMW X6M / X5M BMW Z4 Jaguar XFR Mazdaspeed3 Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart Nissan 370 Z Porsche 911 GT3 Porsche Boxster / Cayman Renault Clio 3 Renault Sport Read More

Audi A1 and A8 will miss September’s Frankfurt Motor Show Audi is working on a handful of new models set for launch over the next 12 months but despite the prominence of the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show two of the key models won’t be appearing. The cars are the all-new A1 minicar and next-generation A8 flagship.

Both cars are expected to be revealed in production form before the end of the year but this September’s Frankfurt event won’t be used, reports Automobilwoche. Instead, the event will likely be used for the world debut of new A5 Sportback.

While the launch dates of the A1 are still up in the air, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has previously stated that the A8 will actually be unveiled in November and available in showrooms only in the second half of next year.2011 Audi A8 renderingsAudi A1 family renderings Read More
  • Bertone, Morgan & Zagato planning new concepts for Italy’s Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este

Bertone, Morgan & Zagato planning new concepts for Italy’s Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este This year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy is set to be a cracker, with three concept car world premiers planned from bespoke coachbuilders Stile Bertone and Zagato, and a retro sports-car for Morgan.

The concept from Bertone is a highly anticipated V8 two-seater built with lightweight materials, and is meant to be an evolution of last year’s B.A.T 11. The new concept from Zagato is being kept under wraps until its unveiling, but there’s growing speculation that the car could be the final production version of the recently revealed Perana Z-One. The new concept from Zagato is being kept under wraps until its unveiling, but there’s growing speculation that the car could be the final production version of the recently revealed Perana Z-One. As for the Morgan, the British carmaker’s concept is said to be a lightweight two-seater built on the Aeromax platform, and there’s a chance that it may enter production if it garners enough positive feedback. The event will also play host to a number of other interesting cars, including BMW's previous 'GINA Light' design study, which so far has remained solely at BMW's museum in Munich. The 592hp (442kW) hybrid-engine Infiniti Essence will also be making an appearance at the show, along with a driveable version of the new Aston Martin One-77 supercar. The Fisker Karma S will also be appearing, along with the Rinspeed iChange. The event, which will kick off on April 24, allows only driveable concepts that have been built within the last three years to be shown, along with historic cars. The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este is purely a beauty competition, with all the show-goers given the chance to vote on the most beautiful car rather than a panel of stuffy design experts.Zagato-designed Perana Z-One sports car Read More
  • 2010 British Motor Show gets canceled

2010 British Motor Show gets canceled The British International Motor Show (BIMS) is one of the oldest events of its type in the world, with the first show taking place at London’s Crystal Palace all the way back in 1903. Unfortunately, even an event as established as the BIMS has fallen prey to the global economic, with organizers announcing today that the show will not run next year.

Unfortunately, even an event as established as the BIMS has fallen prey to the global economic, with organizers announcing today that the show will not run next year. Britain’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the official body that runs the event, stated in an official release that the “economic downturn and unprecedented challenges facing the auto industry, both in the UK and around the world, have made it impossible for exhibitors to commit to a 2010 event”. What’s worrying is that the show may not return even after the economy picks up as the SMMT has already closed its exhibitions department. Last year the show saw just 472,300 attendees, down from a high of 709,422 just ten years earlier. A list of exhibitors that have pulled out of next year’s event is yet to be released but over the past several months many major names, including Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari, have all revealed plans to pass up several international motor shows this year. The situation was getting so bad that many of these brands skipped January’s Detroit Auto Show and almost led to this year’s Tokyo Auto Show being canned due to low particpation rates. Read More
  • Volvo adds four more cars to efficient DRIVe lineup in Geneva

Volvo adds four more cars to efficient DRIVe lineup in Geneva Slashing the cost of ownership is a good strategy in today's car market, especially in Europe where emissions taxes are a large part of the yearly expense. Volvo's DRIVe line of cars, expanded with four more models today, is therefore not just smart in an environmental sense, but a business sense as well. The four new cars are the V70, S80, XC60 and XC70.

The first three cars in the DRIVe line, the C30, S40, and V50, were all designed to register below 120g/km CO2, and in fact all slipped in at 107g/km or lower - all about the same as a typical Toyota Prius. The four new additions add two more tiers of efficiency, with 140g/km and 160g/km... Slashing the cost of ownership is a good strategy in today's car market, especially in Europe where emissions taxes are a large part of the yearly expense. The four new cars are the V70, S80, XC60 and XC70. The first three cars in the DRIVe line, the C30, S40, and V50, were all designed to register below 120g/km CO2, and in fact all slipped in at 107g/km or lower - all about the same as a typical Toyota Prius. The four new additions add two more tiers of efficiency, with 140g/km and 160g/km as their goals. This allows room for larger cars while still retaining a legitimately green (and cost-saving) image. The V70 and S80 both rate at 129g/km, while the XC60 and XC70 rate 159g/km, just squeaking in below their 160g/km target. To help get these low figures, the V70 and S80 get 1.6L diesels, while the XC60 and XC70 are offered with FWD powertrains. Those emissions figures translate into very respectable fuel economy as well: the V70 and S80 DRIVe models get 48mpg US (4.9L/100km) while the XC60 and XC70 rate 39.2mpg US (6.0L/100km). Like their DRIVe predecessors, the new models get these high figures through a combination of a wide range of technologies. Some of the trick and techniques include taller gear ratios, start-stop function (only on the C30, S40 and V50), regenerative battery charging, and improved aerodynamics. Mercedes and BMW have done similar things with their BlueEfficiency and EfficientDynamics lines, while GM offers its XFE line with many of the same modifications.Volvo DRIVe Concepts Read More

Already the car has been caught several times by spy photographers as it undergoes testing. The key themes General Motors is emphasizing in the new crossover SUV are the fresh appearance and dynamic styling. Perhaps seeking to shake off some of the staid perception of the brand, which is, in part, already happening thanks to the CTS and its supercharged big-brother, the CTS-V, Cadillac is pitching the new SRX as a continuation of that new design inspiration. The appearance shares enough of the styling of the two sedans to make missing the connection difficult. It also shares thematic traits with the Provoq Concept shown earlier this year. Before the car goes on sale about a year from now, it will make the rounds at the major car shows, starting later this year, possibly with the Paris Motor Show in October. The company is saving the car's technical details until then, but hints at AWD capability with its talk of wet-weather traction and possibly the inclusion of the 3.6L direct-injected V6 by reference to 'excellent driving dynamics'.2010 Cadillac SRX Sneak Preview2010 Cadillac SRX plays in the snow Read More
