Since its victorious introduction at the NHRA Winternationals in 1968, Ford's Cobra Jet Mustang has created a legacy of power, performance and triumph. The latest version, on show today, was finished in a “SEMA Special” paint scheme and a contrasting graphics package. The 2010 Cobra Jet, like its predecessor, is a factory-built race car that is intended for NHRA Stock and Super Stock racing. The goal for the 2010 Cobra Jet was to enhance the race features to further make its own place in NHRA history. These include options for a full race-prepared automatic or manual transmission, drag race-specific shocks and springs, manual steering and brakes, and a fully certified roll cage. Additionally, Ford engineers have developed for the 2010 Cobra Jet a factory-first launch control/rev limiter that will allow drivers to preset the rpm after they stage the car--when they are ready to leave, all they do is put the throttle pedal to the floor. Previously, the launch control/rev limiter was only available as an aftermarket option. Production of the new race cars will commence in January, with delivery of all vehicles expected in the first quarter of 2010. [Ford] Read More

2010 Ford Mustang Ups Incentives To Keep Pace With Camaro

Whether you're a muscle car fan or not, you have to admire the tenacity with which brand loyalists cling to their preferred marque. It's an example of character trait that is itself almost as "retro" as the cars themselves. And the carmakers behind the pony-car badges are just as serious. This month, Ford has decided to boost its incentives to help even the score against the hot-selling 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.

A slow economy aside, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has been going gangbusters, outselling GM's production capacity for the car and topping all other muscle car contenders since June. That's in spite of the Camaro's rather sluggish on-road...

That's in spite of the Camaro's rather sluggish on-road performance in comparison to the lighter, nimbler Mustang. Not everyone is dead-set on buying their family brand, however, and with a big market of buyers out there holding tightly onto their cash, it takes something special to jar them into action. So Ford has decided to come back at the market with a serious offer: 0% financing and $1,000 cash back. The 0% term only lasts for 36 months, so if you need a smaller payment, you'll have to opt for 1.9% financing to get a typical 60-month term. The bargain lasts through November 2, so if you've got a mind to get into one yourself, now is a good time to act. [Kicking Tires] Read More

If you're not a regular at the Fox Car Report, live every Thursday at 5 p.m. Eastern, you're missing out. Our own John Voelcker is a frequent guest there, and yesterday, he and Autoblog's Alex Nunez were on alongside Ford global product development vice president Derrick Kuzak and host Gary Gastelu. After the show, Voelcker and Nunez came across some interesting info: Ford plans to unveil the powertrain for the 2011 Ford Mustang at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show. The LA show is typically a big show for most carmakers, though recent budget cutbacks have led some carmakers to draw down their presence. Nevertheless, Ford continues to bring out important new models there, including the Fusion, Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ. Last year's show also saw the world debut of the 2010 Ford Mustang, and this year we'll learn the official plans for the 2011 Ford Mustang's powertrain. We've already heard that the 2011 Mustang is expected to get a pair of new engines--a 3.7-liter Duratec V-6 engine to replace the existing 4.0-liter unit in the current base Mustang. Power is expected to go up despite the drop in displacement, from 210 horsepower to a whopping 315 horsepower. That's about even witth the curren't 4.6-liter V-8's output in the Mustang GT, so Ford is upping the performance there, too, with the new 5.0-liter Coyote V-8, rated at 400 horsepower. Joining it is also a rumored twin-turbocharged, aluminum-block "Road Runner" version of the engine that could rate as high as 600 horsepower for the next GT500. We'll have to wait until December to find out for sure what Ford will be packing into the next Mustang, but if it's anything like the rumors, it's sure to be exciting. Other major upgrades to the 2011 Mustang include an even more focused Track Pack, with a sharper suspension, bigger brakes and grippy Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires, plus the return of the "5.0" badge. Report: 2012 Ford Mustang GT500 To Get Twin-Turbo 'Road Runner' V-8

We've all heard about the 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 engine in the works at Ford by now, but today new talk has emerged of a twin-turbocharged version of that engine, dubbed "Road Runner," which will be dropped into the 2012 Mustang GT500.

The Road Runner tag is a humorous play on the cartoon nemesis of Wile E. Coyote--not a curious reference to the hard-running Plymouth of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Of course, the whole report is far from official, but it does make sense given Ford's recent spate of twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engines. If the twin-turbo application is given to the 5.0-liter V-8 Coyote, it could generate in excess of 600...

If the twin-turbo application is given to the 5.0-liter V-8 Coyote, it could generate in excess of 600 horsepower depending on how far Ford's SVT team decides to push it. Engines that are also thought to be in the works for the next Mustang, starting from 2011, are the standard 5.0-liter Coyote V-8, expected to earn a 400-horsepower rating, and a new 3.7-liter Duratec V-6 rated at about 315 horsepower. All of the talk about 5.0-liter engines at Ford has also riled up fans to speculate on the possible return of the "5.0" badge to the Mustang lineup, which is looking more and more like a near-certainty given the confluence of all the various reports. Along with the twin-turbocharging, the 2012 Mustang GT500's 5.0-liter V-8 engine is also expected to feature an aluminum block. That same year, the regular 5.0-liter V-8 Mustang GT is expected to get a power bump from the initial 400-horsepower rating, and though it's not yet known where it will land, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think Ford's targeting the 422-425-horsepower mark set by the Camaro SS and Challenger SRT8. Also on deck for 2012 is a new Boss version of the Mustang, though details on that model are still being held close. In the meantime, the 2011 Mustang is expected to get an even more focused Track Pack to complement the big V-8, so there'll be something for enthusiasts to sink their teeth into while they wait for the next generation of muscle car mayhem.
