Starting in late December, customers of Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and the new Ram Truck brand, will be able to watch many of their favorite TV programs while on the road thanks to a dealer-installed mobile TV option from the company’s accessories division, Mopar. Dubbed FLO TV Auto Entertainment, the new system will offer as many as 20 channels and is the first of its kind for a domestic automaker. Some of the channels will include CBS Mobile, CNBC, Comedy Central, FOX News, MSNBC, MTV, NBC 2Go and Nickelodeon. A small antenna, similar in size to a laptop mouse, is mounted on a vehicle's roof to deliver the digital TV signal. Inside the vehicle, the receiver and wiring are installed under the interior trim of the vehicle and are not visible to occupants. Signals are then displayed on the vehicle’s navigation screen or a soon-to-be released headrest or seat-top DVD entertainment system. Until now, the challenge for mobile TV has been to deliver high-quality, uninterrupted coverage in urban environments and at highway speeds. Existing mobile TV systems in the U.S. either offer limited channels or require large satellite dishes on vehicle roofs--and a large price tag to match. Mopar's suggested retail price is $629, plus installation. A one-year pre-paid FLO TV service subscription is included with installation. [Chrysler] Read More

You may recall we saw some concept sketches back in April for a retro-designed gullwing coupe based on the original Mercedes-Benz SL300 Gullwing from the 1950s. The car we’re talking about is the disturbingly cute 300 SL Panamericana from Gullwing-America, which you can read about by clicking here. For Gullwing-America’s latest effort, the company has developed a new bodykit, which has been dubbed the Panamericana and is designed to make the new SLS AMG look more like its 1950s predecessor. Some of the classic features include a cleaner design for the front radiator grille and the ribs on the hood and fenders, new chrome pieces, custom 19- and 20-inch wheels, plus a new high-flow exhaust. Otherwise, the Panamericana is virtually a stock SLS AMG although customers can opt for racing stripes, aluminum door sills, and Alcantara trim. Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date. [Gullwing-America] Read More

Ford's re-packaging of the Mustang into its 2010 model-year form factor has pleased the critics with a sleeker look, but now Ford Racing is getting ready to please the folks that live only to see quick ETs with the 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet, which was revealed today at the 2009 SEMA Auto Show in Las Vegas. Since its victorious introduction at the NHRA Winternationals in 1968, Ford's Cobra Jet Mustang has created a legacy of power, performance and triumph. The latest version, on show today, was finished in a “SEMA Special” paint scheme and a contrasting graphics package. The 2010 Cobra Jet, like its predecessor, is a factory-built race car that is intended for NHRA Stock and Super Stock racing. The goal for the 2010 Cobra Jet was to enhance the race features to further make its own place in NHRA history. These include options for a full race-prepared automatic or manual transmission, drag race-specific shocks and springs, manual steering and brakes, and a fully certified roll cage. Additionally, Ford engineers have developed for the 2010 Cobra Jet a factory-first launch control/rev limiter that will allow drivers to preset the rpm after they stage the car--when they are ready to leave, all they do is put the throttle pedal to the floor. Previously, the launch control/rev limiter was only available as an aftermarket option. Production of the new race cars will commence in January, with delivery of all vehicles expected in the first quarter of 2010. [Ford] Read More

Chevrolet Hits SEMA With Five Radical Camaro Concepts

Chevrolet took the covers off five dramatic Camaro concepts at this week’s 2009 SEMA Auto Show, kicking off what is expected to be one of the event’s biggest showcases. The lineup of tuned muscle cars from Chevrolet cover nearly the full spectrum of Camaro modifications, with forced-induction, six-cylinder and V-8 fans all accounted for.

The best part is that rather than showcasing wild concepts that would never feasibly make it to production, many of the Camaro modifications and accessories on show can be ordered through Chevrolet dealers for installation at the time of the vehicle’s purchase. This allows customers to...

This allows customers to personalize their cars to their exact wishes, with installation handled by the dealer and the cost rolled into the monthly payments. First up is a specially tuned V-6 Camaro built for comedian and avid car nut Jay Leno. Powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter direct injected V-6 that is standard in Camaro LS and LT models, Leno’s Camaro blends high performance with surprising efficiency in a racing-ready package. A pair of Turbonetics T-3 turbochargers blows through a custom air-to-air intercooler, force-feeding the engine about 7 psi of boost and lifting its horsepower level to about 425—the same as the V-8 model. That’s about 40% greater than stock and in normal driving (when the turbochargers aren’t making boost), there’s virtually no penalty in fuel economy over the non-turbocharged 3.6-liter engine. Next up is the Camaro Synergy, which essentially showcases a new green paint scheme that will be offered on a special-edition Camaro in the first half of 2010. Other details include 21-inch wheels, a full bodykit and a performance intake system. Similar to the Camaro Synergy, the new Camaro Chroma demonstrates how carefully selected accessories available through Chevrolet dealers can create a very unique look for the popular sports coupe. Apart from 21-inch wheels, however, most of the highlights are basically custom graphics for the car. The same story goes for the last two Camaro concepts, the Camaro Dusk and Camaro Graphics. Both cars feature extensive accessory graphics packages, with the intent of soliciting feedback from Camaro enthusiasts for possible production. In addition to the Camaro contingent, Chevrolet is also showing the Silverado ZR2 concept and an accessorized 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. Some of the accessories, which will go on sale in early 2010, include mesh inserts for the front fender vents, an iPod connector, Grand Sport-logos, and several ZR1 pieces. [General Motors] Read More

If a turbocharged, lowered, beefed-up Subaru sport wagon sounds like a great car for taking to the track or for some autocross action, then this is one concept you should definitely take a close look at if you happen to be attending SEMA this year.

Hot on the heels of last week’s tease of Subaru’s WRX STI and Legacy VIP concept cars planned for this week’s 2009 SEMA Auto Show comes a third concept from the Japanese automaker, once again based on the new 2010 Legacy. If a turbocharged, lowered, beefed-up Subaru sport wagon sounds like a great car for taking to the track or for some autocross action, then this is one concept you should definitely take a close look at if you happen to be attending SEMA this year. Described as the “ultimate” track-ready sporty wagon, the new Subaru Legacy GTk concept car is aimed directly at performance enthusiasts who may possibly have a family-lift the tailgate and you’ll find a Coyote Motorsports XP go-kart for the kiddies. The concept was developed by Specialized Vehicles Inc. (SVI) and features a modified roof, blacked-out headlights, a custom front bumper with integrated fog-lights, hood vents, smoked tail lights and a fully custom black-over-red paint scheme. The powertrain was also boosted up and now includes a new six-speed manual gearbox, a modified exhaust system and recalibrated ECU, all of which liberates a healthy 300 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque from the vehicle’s 2.5-liter ‘boxer’ engine. To make sure all that grunt reaches the ground safely, designers also added a short-throw shifter, a viscous coupling locking center differential, a new strut tower brace, a Bilstein suspension kit and a full Brembo brake package with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers in the rear. Some of the modifications include a Corsa exhaust system, custom honeycomb wheels and Nitto tires. No word on production but if the concept proves popular enough Lingenfelter may go ahead and offer the package as a new conversion for Camaro owners. Believe it or not but this is not the first Trans Am conversion kit currently in development for the new Camaro. Earlier this year, ASC Creative Services also unveiled its modern interpretation of the legendary muscle car, which you can read about in our previous story by clicking here, and soon after that Trans Am Depot unveiled a second conversion kit.
