Jaguar Wimps Out Of Cadillac CTS-V Challenge

Last month, during a discussion with journalists about General Motors’ new “May the Best Car Win” marketing campaign, Bob Lutz laid down the challenge to any journalist to a duel with the Cadillac CTS-V to see if any comparable car could topple the Caddy.

The guys at Jalopnik were the first to accept the challenge, putting forward Wes Siler, who we would later find out would compete in a 510 horsepower 2010 Jaguar XFR.

Not so apparently. Jaguar’s PR team have reportedly backed out of the challenge, which is scheduled to take place this Thursday at the Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, N.Y.

Jaguar spokesman Stuart Schorr admitted to Jalopnik that he expected the XFR would lose to the CTS-V but said losing wasn’t the problem. Schorr went on to reveal that Jaguar is worried the brakes of the XFR won’t be able to last the necessary five laps unless their cooling was upgraded. Jaguar isn’t alone, incidentally, from backing out of the challenge. Mercedes-Benz has also put forward its concerns and has decided it will better to sit back and watch. So what now? Jalopnik will still compete using another Cadillac CTS-V as well as an all-wheel drive Mitsubishi Evo. Also on hand will be several ‘civilian’ cars, including a BMW M3, a BMW M5, an Audi RS4 and even another Cadillac CTS-V. [Jalopnik] Read More

Neiman Marcus Jaguar XJL Supercharged Sells Out In Four Hours

The Neiman Marcus Christmas Book is a holiday tradition for many, but not all the cars that have been offered in the book over the years have proved as collectible as the buyers might have hoped. Fifty eager Jaguar buyers have placed their bets against that eventuality for this year's offering, as the 2010 Jaguar XJL Supercharged Neiman Marcus Edition sold out in just four hours.

Sales started noon Eastern time last Friday, and before close of business, all 50 examples of the car were spoken for, with just four hours and four minutes required to move every last one of them.

Priced at $105,000, that's a cool $5.25 million, or about $1.3 million per hour. Not too shabby even by Neiman Marcus and Jaguar standards. As fast as that is, however, it's not the quickest seller Neiman Marcus has seen. In 2006, the Neiman Marcus BMW M6 sold 50 units in just one minute, 32 seconds. The Neiman Marcus XJL features a unique appearance package, with Celestial Black paint and navy/ivory interior leather with Zebrano matte wood accents. Twenty-inch split-spoke alloy wheels, illuminated tread plats and a custom nameplate that denotes each car's 1-50 serial number also mark the car out as something beyond the typical production 2010 Jaguar XJL. The exterior is painted in an exclusive Celestial Black metallic color. The holiday sale of the Neiman Marcus Edition marks the Jaguar XJ's sales launch as well. “Being a part of The Neiman Marcus Christmas Book is a spectacular way to launch the Jaguar XJ, one of the most anticipated new luxury cars in the market this year," says Richard Beattie, Jaguar's executive vice president, marketing & sales. This is the third time a Jaguar has been selected as the featured vehicle in the Book. In 1968, the XKE Grand Touring Coupe was featured, and most recently, the 1997 Jaguar XK8 Convertible. Not content to just put together a custom appearance package, the 2010 Jaguar XJL Supercharged Neiman Marcus Edition also comes complete with a five-piece fitted luggage set in matching navy blue leather. Reservations for the car open Friday, October 16 at noon Eastern time, and you can make yours by calling 1-866-524-6963. The list price is $105,000. The standard 2010 Jaguar XJ will begin arriving in showrooms in early 2010. Read our story on the car's reveal for more details on the 2010 Jaguar XJ, including an extensive photo gallery. Read More

Jaguar XF Estate Back On The Table For 2012?

Earlier this year, rumors began to emerge of a Jaguar XF Estate for the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. We already previewed the car last April, but development was thought to be stalled. Today, new reports of the project's revival are breaking and it looks like the XF Estate could be on the road by 2012.

The Estate would expand on the already highly successful XF range at its mid-cycle facelift with a roomier, more cargo-capable variant that offers an eminently more civilized alternative to a crossover or SUV--shocking, but wagons do have their strong suits.

Earlier rumors have an XF-R Estate in the works as well. With enough power and style to give even Audi's dashing RS6 or BMW's M5 Touing--both verboten in the U.S.--a run for their money, the 510-horsepower super-wagon might offer America a new perspective on wagons. The standard XF Estate is expected to share engines, and trim levels, with the XF sedan. Eager Americans ought not to count their domestic fowl before they're hatched however, as the XF-R variant might make a similar move to its German counterparts and sidestep Stateside sales. Barring such a decision, the XF Estate is shaping up to be one exciting addition to an already solid model range. [Autocar] Read More

    Rendered: 2012 Jaguar XF Estate

The thought of a luxury station wagon may seem a little odd here in the U.S. but over in Europe, and many other parts of the globe, they are all the rage, with automakers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and especially Audi all enjoying great success with their respective wagon models.

This is a trend Jaguar would like to pick on. While the now defunct X-Type Estate saw little success, due mostly to the lack of popularity of the sedan on which it was based, Jaguar is hoping to claw back some of the luxury wagon market with a new XF Estate.

This is a trend Jaguar would like to pick on. While the now defunct X-Type Estate saw little success, due mostly to the lack of popularity of the sedan on which it was based, Jaguar is hoping to claw back some of the luxury wagon market with a new XF Estate. The XF sedan has proven very popular for Jaguar that there are even considerations for a possible coupe and convertible. Not that long ago the idea of Jaguar developing so many different vehicles was unheard of but with the financial backing of new owner Tata, there’s the chance we could see the new models. This computer generated rendering gives us a preview of one the XF Estate. As the rendering suggests the Estate would sport a conventional rear-lifting tailgate and extended roofline. Another possibility is an extended wheelbase and beefed up suspension for extra load capacity, but the extra cost of reengineering the car may rule out this option. According to latest reports, the XF Estate is in the works and is due to go on sale in early 2012. This date coincides with a planned facelift for the XF, with changes such as a bolder grille being included and a new four-cylinder turbodiesel also set to appear in the XF line. [Autocar] Read More

    Report: Jaguar Planning 'Five-Door Coupe'

The proliferation of not-quite-hatchbacks and not-wagons epitomized by the BMW 5-series GT and Audi A5 Sportback is about to grow, according to a new report out of Jaguar. The car, termed a "five-door coupe" is currently code-named RD7 and is being called an evolution of the RD6 concept.

The RD6 concept (pictured), unveiled in 2003, featured a decidedly Jaguar nose, sculpted hind quarters somewhat reminiscent of the Volvo C30, and no B-pillar thanks to suicide rear doors for a very open cockpit. It was also powered by a diesel engine, a trait the production car is likely to share. Some of the features, including the front clip, can be...

Some of the features, including the front clip, can be expected to be replaced by the modern Jaguar look as exhibited on the 2010 XF and all-new 2010 Jaguar XJ sedan. The RD7 is expected to be built on a slightly scaled-down version of the XF's platform, so the existing range of engines that power that car could also see application in the five-door coupe. Don't expect to see the RD7 on the roads anytime soon, however, as Jaguar's XE is due next according to the report. That car, Jaguar's return to its sports car heritage, is expected to be reminiscent of the F-Type Concept, and will come in both coupe and roadster body styles with the Porsche Boxster and Cayman and Lotus Evora as its primary performance targets. The XE isn't expected to be on the road until 2013, pushing the RD7 out to 2014 at the earliest. [Inside Line] Read More
