The teaser sketch above suggests the general outline of the car, reflecting a lot of the curvaceousness of the new G coupe at the front and rear, though with a somewhat elongated sedan profile. Not much is known about the next-generation M series but previous reports have speculated that both gasoline direct-injection and hybrid technology will be available. The hybrid system could be similar to the system applied in the Essence coupe concept, which the company calls "sophisticated and unobtrusive" through use of an "innovative parallel hybrid system, combining a high-output 3.7-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with a new ultra-slim '3D' electric motor." On August 14 Infiniti will preview the new sedan using a foam model and a visual projection system called virtual video mapping. The technology will allow a rendering of the vehicle to be projected onto the model, giving people a firsthand, to-scale preview of the car. The car will look as if it's really there, despite the fact that the it will be completely digital aside from its foam substrate. Infiniti says it is the first company to use this method to unveil an upcoming car. Anyone not attending will be able to see a live Webcast of the event via Infiniti's Web site (www.infinitiusa.com). The first official shots of the car are expected to be released in December, while actual sales are scheduled to kick off next spring. Read More
  • Nissan unveils fuel-saving dual injector system

Nissan unveils fuel-saving dual injector system Nissan today announced the development of a Dual Injector system designed to improve fuel efficiency in small-displacement petrol engines. The new fuel delivery system, the first of its kind in the world (for mass produced cars), uses an injector for each port rather than one per cylinder – speeding up fuel vaporization, reducing the amount of unburned fuel and reducing hydrocarbon emissions.

The new fuel delivery system, the first of its kind in the world (for mass produced cars), uses an injector for each port rather than one per cylinder – speeding up fuel vaporization, reducing the amount of unburned fuel and reducing hydrocarbon emissions. While most current petrol engines utilize one injector per cylinder (sending fuel to two intake ports), the new Nissan Dual Injector system doubles the number of injectors per cylinder. This reduces the diameter of the fuel droplets by about 60%, resulting in smoother, more stable combustion. The system also adds continuous valve timing control on the exhaust side to conventional intake-side control, improving heat efficiency, reducing pumping losses and raising fuel efficiency by up to 4% in sync with the dual injectors. While similar in theory to direct-injection systems, which also inject fuel directly into cylinders, such direct injection systems are difficult to use on small-displacement engines because they require a high-pressure pump that complicates system design, making component layout less cost-efficient. In contrast, the Nissan Dual Injector system is lighter and structurally simpler because it sends fuel at normal pressures, reducing cost by about 60% compared to direct-injection engines of similar displacement. The system also requires half the amount of rare metals in the catalytic converter compared with a standard engine, helping to further reduce costs. The first production application will appear early next year but so far no actual models have been confirmed. Read More

According to a new report, a hybrid model is also expected in the near future. Speaking with Ward’s Auto, GM's global vehicle line executive James Frederico appeared to confirm the hybrid LaCrosse but did not disclose exact timing. "We are always working on future applications for our hybrids," he said. "The exact introduction plans (will) be announced later by Buick marketing." This revelation of a future hybrid LaCrosse comes just weeks after GM canceled its mild Malibu hybrid starting in the next model year. It’s also likely that with the new LaCrosse hybrid will be the introduction of GM's next generation BAS+ mild hybrid system. The Malibu and LaCrosse share similar chassis components and are built at the same facility. According to GM, the Malibu hybrid was canceled due to weak sales, and how this will translate into sales for a new LaCrosse hybrid remains to be seen. GM has publicly stated it plans to have 14 hybrid models by 2012, with this apparently being one of them. According to Frederico, "There is a future for alternative propulsion in our midsize vehicles, we're just not at the point to share any details.” Via: All Car Electrics2010 Buick LaCrosse sedan Read More
  • 2010 Buick LaCrosse to offer new direct-injection four-cylinder

2010 Buick LaCrosse to offer new direct-injection four-cylinder The new 2010 Buick Lacrosse has made waves with its attractive design and overall build quality since its unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Today General Motors went into more detail on the car with a web-based launch presentation, revealing that the powertrain lineup will include not only the 3.0L and 3.6L V6s previously announced, but also a new Ecotec 2.4L direct-injection four-cylinder.

That means that all three engines available in the LaCrosse lineup will feature direct injection technology. “Direct injection is a key component of GM’s ongoing strategy to use advanced propulsion technology to help us deliver... The new 2010 Buick Lacrosse has made waves with its attractive design and overall build quality since its unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show in January. “Direct injection is a key component of GM’s ongoing strategy to use advanced propulsion technology to help us deliver more fuel-efficient cars today and in the future,” said Tom Stephens, vice chairman, Global Product Development. “GM is using multiple technology pathways to achieve increased efficiency and to diversify energy sources – and we’re applying them where they make the most sense for customers when it comes to efficiency, performance and cost.” But the real news in terms of powertrain is the availability of the 2.4L Ecotec four-banger. Initially the engine will only be available on the CX-level trim, but it could go further if demand warrants it. The engine itself, while not all-new, is another evolution of the Ecotec engine line that delivers 182hp (136kW) and 172lb-ft (233Nm) of torque while managing an estimated 20mpg city and 30mpg highway in the LaCrosse sedan. Those aren't particularly impressive numbers until you remember that the LaCrosse is a fairly large vehicle. Buick thinks about 25% of buyers will opt for the four-pot. Since Buick is aiming the LaCrosse directly at competitors like the Acura TL and Lincoln MKZ, which don't offer a four-cylinder option to fuel-conscious buyers, the GM brand thinks it has an advantage even before the street-level comparisons begin. The 3.0L and 3.6L V6 engines, both part of GM's High Feature V6 range, will also be available, with the larger engine standard equipment on the higher-spec CXS trim. For more about these engines, or the various trims and equipment available, read our original release story here. In the future, a hybrid variant is also likely. Speaking at the online web launch of the LaCrosse today, GM's global mid-size line executive Jim Federico said, "There is a future for alt. propulsion in our midsize vehicles, we are just not at the point to share the details." Buick is counting on the new look of the LaCrosse to draw in new buyers, bring down the average age of its customer base, and help to continue the 'renaissance' started with the new Enclave SUV.2010 Buick LaCrosse sedan Read More

The first model to go on sale will be the SRX, which Cadillac has confirmed today will be priced from $34,155 when it arrives in showrooms next month. The CTS Sport Wagon, meanwhile, will arrive later this summer. The midsize luxury crossover segment remains strong in the U.S. despite new vehicle sales reaching 30-year lows. The segment currently accounts for nearly one quarter of all luxury vehicles sold in the U.S. market, and with its fuel-efficient engines and generous equipment list the SRX is poised to become a success. Key competitors include the Lexus RX, Acura MDX, and BWW X3 and X5 SUVs. Cadillac has decided to offer the SRX with a single engine option, in this case a 3.0L direct-injected V6 with 260hp (193kW) and 221lb-ft (300Nm) of torque on tap. Its makers say fuel economy in the mid-20s on the highway is expected, but testing isn’t complete. A six-speed Hyrdra-Matic 6T70 automatic transmission also gets revised ratios to help cut fuel usage, while a standard AWD system improves handling in both dry and inclement weather. Standard safety equipment includes a range of front, side and curtain airbags plus dual pre-tensioners and load limiters on the front seat belts. A rollover mitigation sensor ties into the traction control system to kelp keep the shiny side up, and trailer stability assist helps keep the cart from getting before the horse. Production of the vehicle will be handled at GM’s Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico, which will also be responsible for Saab’s upcoming 9-4X crossover.
