BMW has long been known for its art cars, and the latest push, complete with a book based around these art cars, is to give MINI that same sort of history.

By using the MINI as a canvas, 10 different artists present 10 different takes on what an art car should be--and what a radically custom MINI paint job can look like.

The latest version of the concept picks up the 2009 tag and is almost certainly closer in look and feel to the production version due next year. While the vehicle displayed at this year's Tokyo event is still a concept, the production version that will be introduced to North America for sale in the second half of 2010 will be packaged as a sporty two-seater hybrid (the concept features a rear seat). If you're wondering, Honda has confirmed that the production CR-Z will make its world debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show next January. Designed as a spiritual successor to the original Honda CRX, the production version of the CR-Z is expected to be powered by a compact four-cylinder engine displacing less than 2.0-liters and matched to an electric motor. The combined output for the car should be close to 140-horsepower, with drive sent to the front wheels via a CVT. Read More

Report: Infiniti Planning Electric 1-Series and A3 Rival

The BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 better look out as Infiniti is reportedly working on a new entry-level model as a direct competitor to the aforementioned premium compacts. Lexus, too, is working on such a car, which was previewed recently by the 2009 LF-Ch Concept, however, there will be one distinguishing factor that could see the baby Infiniti form its own niche--an all-electric powertrain.

Such a car from Infiniti would be ideal in strengthening the brand’s presence in Europe, where compact cars like the BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 sell in substantial numbers. The move reflects the growing demand for cars that are smaller and more fuel and CO2 efficient, a trend Infiniti hopes to capitalize on. Not much is known about the new baby Infiniti but according to a company insider present at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, the car will be a compact hatchback that shares its powertrain with the all-electric Nissan Leaf. This means it will feature an electric motor with roughly 107-horsepower and 206-pound-feet of torque running on lithium-ion batteries. "A small electric Infiniti is definitely on the horizon, as are larger electric models too," the insider revealed. Expect to see the car, in both electric and conventional gasoline forms, debut sometime in 2012. [AutoExpress] Read More

    Spy Shots: 2011 Audi A1

Audi’s new A1 premium compact is expected to hit showrooms in late 2010 as a 2011 model but today we have the first spy shots of actual prototypes taken as the car was undergoing testing in Germany. Aimed squarely at other upmarket compact cars, namely the Mini Cooper, the new A1 will be available in several different variants--just like the Mini family.

The lineup is expected to be filled with the regular three-door and five-door hatchback models, but a stylish convertible and a compact MPV are likely to be launched as well.

Audi’s new A1 premium compact is expected to hit showrooms in late 2010 as a 2011 model but today we have the first spy shots of actual prototypes taken as the car was undergoing testing in Germany. The lineup is expected to be filled with the regular three-door and five-door hatchback models, but a stylish convertible and a compact MPV are likely to be launched as well. The latest images clearly show the shape of the grille and LED detailing in the headlights. Powertrain options will range from about 1.2- to 1.6-liters in displacement and output up to 200-horsepower in a performance ‘S’ variant. A mild hybrid model may also be offered, as previewed by the 2008 A1 Sportback Hybrid Concept. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has reaffirmed on a number of occasions plans to boost the brand’s lineup to 40 models by 2015, as well as expanding its production facilities. Audi has already confirmed it will invest €200 million in its Brussels plant to prepare it for the new A1 range. Audi was originally planning to build around 100,000 A1s per year but with the new upgrades production can now be boosted closer to 120,000 units annually. There’s a strong chance the A1 will be arriving in North America. Last month Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi’s head of sales, revealed that the A1’s launch in North America could help the automaker reach its goal of surpassing BMW and Mercedes-Benz in sales in all markets by 2015. Though the A1's position as a premium compact isn't something U.S. buyers have had much exposure to, the credit crunch and subsequent curtailing of salaries may have opened the door--along with higher average fuel prices--for a feasible, if small, sales market for the car. Chrysler & Lancia To Share Products, Delta Could Come To U.S.

Italy's Lancia has had a turbulent past and has only been back on the automotive radar for a short while now. The relatively niche brand, however, may soon be thrown into the spotlight as latest reports indicate that it may be sharing products with Chrysler in the near future.

The appointment of Lancia CEO Olivier Francois as the new head of the Chrysler division is a clear indication that the two brands will become more closely entwined. In fact, several reports are claiming that Chrysler and Lancia will share products across their respective ranges, including everything from small hatchbacks to full-size sedans.

Lancia is expected to get its own version of the Chrysler 300 sedan as a replacement for its outgoing Thesis flagship sedan, and in return Chrysler would get its own version of the Ypsilon minicar to sell in Europe. The move is part of Fiat’s plan to bolster Chrysler’s sales in Europe, especially since there are claims that the Dodge brand could be disbanded from the European market altogether. The story doesn’t end there, however. While the Lancia brand will most likely be sold in Europe only, there’s a chance that one model, the Delta, could eventually be sold in the U.S. wearing a Chrysler badge. Of course, all this remains pure speculation for now--but we can still hope. Stay tuned for an update. [Autocar] Read More

    Spy Shots: 2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The current Mercedes-Benz B-Class has enjoyed reasonable success in most of the markets it has been launched in, selling over 120,000 units in its first year alone, but the next-generation model due in 2011 is expected to sell in even higher volumes and will be sold in the U.S. for the first time.

To increase sales there are rumors that Mercedes-Benz is planning to expand the range by adding new variants in addition to the regular hatch: a new coupe-cabrio, a sporty hatchback to rival BMW's 1-series range and possible a four-door sedan with coupe styling.

The only model confirmed for production, however, is the hatchback seen here testing in prototype form. Expect to see a range of small displacement turbo engines and new hybrid variants offering in the B-Class family, as well as a hydrogen fuel cell model. Mercedes-Benz previously reversed a decision to bring the current B-Class Stateside because of fears it would damage the luxury brand’s exclusivity and the low dollar exchange rate would make it too expensive. However, unexpectedly strong sales of the Smart Fortwo minicar are prompting renewed interest in selling the B-Class, and even the A-Class, in North America. Read More
