Video: Colin Braun shows Queen Latifah the ropes in the new 2010 Mustang GT It's not everyday that a hip hop artist and actress like Queen Latifah climbs into the cockpit to hit the track for some high-speed driving lessons, but with Ford's marketing department eager to boost sales of the 2010 Mustang in the face of competition from the very hot 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, the game has just stepped up a notch.

Heavy on hype and low on content, this first episode focuses largely on Latifah's enthusiasm for the Mustang itself, though there is some on-track time with coach and young NASCAR Truck Series driver Colin Braun.

The ostensible reason behind the video shoot was prep for Latifah's inclusion of a new Mustang in the extended cut of her music video for the song 'Fast Cars'. Whatever the occasion, however, it's always fun to hear an American V8 singing like it was meant to, and despite hitting some decent slip angles, the 2010 'Stang looks pretty composed on the track. Last year Ford built a custom Mustang dubbed the AV8R for the annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Gathering of Eagles festival, an event that saw the car eventually auctioned off for a princely sum of $500,000. For this year’s event Ford has built another stunner, once again based around an aviation theme, and once again raising a lot of money for young flight enthusiasts. The latest car is called the AV-X10 Dearborn Doll and it’s based on the new 2010 Ford Mustang GT equipped with the glass roof option. It has been created together with a team from Ford Racing and includes a wealth of performance modifications, such as a 550hp (410kW) supercharger kit, a high-flow FR500S exhaust system, a short throw shifter, a new handling pack featuring dampers, lowering springs and an anti-roll bar. Another special feature is the car’s 4.6L V8 engine, which is the 10-millionth powerplant built at Ford’s Romeo facility. As for the aviation theme, Ford designers have added a paint and graphic theme that pays homage to the WWII P-51 Mustang fighter plans, as well as AV-X10 lettering, a Shelby GT500 lower rear fascia and rear wing and 19in forged alloy wheels finished in liquid silver with yellow propeller tips. The glass roof has also been treated to an abstract translucent star and bars scheme for added effect. The car was auctioned off during the 2009 EAA Air Venture Oshkosh fly-in convention which took place between July 27 and August 2 in Wisconsin. The $250,000 raised will go to the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles program, which educates and engages young people about aviation.2010 Ford Mustang2009 Ford Mustang AV-X10 Dearborn Doll Read More

Gemballa adds Gold Edition to Mirage GT stable Since 2006, Gemballa has been building custom interpretations of the Porsche Carrera GT supercar, making it perhaps the foremost Carrera GT tuner in the world. For its latest iteration, Gemballa has decided to relax the power output and focus on a decisively seductive gold finish.

Some of Gemballa's GTs have put out as much as 750hp (560kW), but the Gold Edition is satisfied with 670hp (500kW) on tap. That's still about 50hp (40kW) more than the stock Carrera GT, however, and with 465lb-ft (630Nm) of torque it's sure to be a fun ride in any gear.

Both of those figures shave two tenths of a second from the stock times, and the power boost takes top speed up to at least 208mph (335km/h). Beyond the power mods, the Gold Edition adds lots of exposed carbon fiber accents, a gold-on-white color scheme and custom alloy wheels. A hydraulic height-adjustable coilover kit is also supplied to improve handling, as well as protect the car when any steep bumps need to be conquered. First Ride: 2010 BMW 5-series Gran Turismo This week Motor Authority had the opportunity to take a ride along in the new 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo at BMW's Performance Driving Center with chief instructor Jim Clark at the wheel. So what is our first impression? In a word, surprised.

This week Motor Authority had the opportunity to take a ride along in the new 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo at BMW's Performance Driving Center with chief instructor Jim Clark at the wheel. So what is our first impression? In a word, surprised. Looking a lot like a lower, less aggressive X6, the 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo's innovative cargo and passenger solutions let a lot of both fit into a more compact form factor than a traditional SUV, but with a ride height that gives more command than a typical sedan. We’ve all known that since the car was officially unveiled in May - the surprising part of the 550i GT's nature is its ride and handling. Though it's a stout vehicle weighing in at almost 5,000lb, the 5-series GT offers impressive acceleration and nearly flat cornering thanks to the 407hp 4.4L twin-turbo V8 under the hood and Adaptive Drive variable damper system. The brakes are equally impressive, able to haul the vehicle's speed down swiftly. Cornering at speed, the 550i GT feels neutral from the passenger seat, no doubt a reflection of the 50.2% front/49.8% rear weight distribution. When we brushed briefly against the limits of traction in one steady-state sweeper, the front nudged out an inch or two and was followed almost immediately by the rear in a smooth transition to a new steady-state line. Sitting in the vehicle at highway speeds, whether front or rear, there's very little intrusion of engine noise into the cabin though wind noise was noticeable. Visibility was excellent in every direction except rearward. Compared to most sedans and SUVs, the 550i GT's rear view is incredibly tight - it's tighter even than the X6. But to work around that, BMW has installed a tremendous range of cameras - 7 in all - to map nearly every inch of the exterior for parking, lane changes and other everyday driving tasks. Passengers - whether in the five-seat or four-seat versions - will find ample legroom in the rear, though the four-seater offers much more comfortable and luxurious accommodations for the backseat. Even when two over-six-footers sat on the same side of the car, both front and rear passengers had a comfortable cushion between knee and dash or seatback. The 'bi-modal' liftgate looks to be quite useful, offering both sedan-style trunk access and hatchback-like rear cargo access with a single complex door. Depending on how the cargo area is configured, the rear seats may or may not be able to adjust in some directions but no matter how the car is configured, it is designed to hold four golf bags. As for the 550i GT's aesthetics, that's by nature subjective, but it certainly does look better in person than in photos. It's still a bit ungainly from some angles, especially the slightly humped rear cargo/window area, but the car's family styling cues mostly work, especially at the front end, which is slightly less aggressive than most recent BMWs. For full details on the 2010 BMW 5-series Gran Turismo and how it came about, read our report on the concept version and check out the production announcement.2010 BMW 5-series GT official images Read More

America’s Tesla Roadster is currently the electric car king when it comes to zero emissions performance cars but British car company Lightning is hard at work preparing a new 700hp (522kW) rival for the Tesla Roadster that it hopes to have in production next year. After that Lightning will reportedly produce three more models, all of which will feature a powertrain derived from the design in the company’s first model, the Lightning GT. Speaking with Autocar, Lightning chairman Ian Sanderson revealed that there will be a number of models: a limo sized luxury saloon, an SUV offroader and a smaller sports car. “These are some way off because we want to concentrate on the Lightning GT, but the plan is that all the derivates will use the GT's powertrain, meaning we can roll them out quickly when we are ready," Sanderson explained. As for the Lightning GT, Sanderson said the car should be ready for sale in spring 2010 and that deposits are already starting to come in, with one-third coming from the UK alone. Other information at this point is scarce, and currently the car's exact specifications have not yet been finalized. Some of the details we know about include a 700hp (522kW) electric powertrain featuring nano-titanate battery technology, which is enough to propel the car from 0-60mph in a flat four seconds and take it a top speed of about 130mph. The electric drive system, dubbed Hi-Pa Drive, packs four permanent magnet brushless motors with one in each wheel. The system also allows for full traction control and regenerative braking on all four wheels independently. Due to power being developed separately in each wheel, there are no gearboxes, differentials, axles, drive shafts or propshafts in the Lightning sports car.Lightning GT Photos Read More
