Cars race along a tree-lined avenue and turn to pass in front of Goodwood House, before climbing a steep and narrow estate road past flint walls and dense woodland groves, heading towards Goodwood's equine racecourse. One of the fastest cars of this year's event was the Scuderia Spider 16M, which completed the course in an incredible time of 59 seconds. The official record for the hillclimb was set in 1999 when Nick Heidfeld drove a McLaren MP4/13 F1 car up the hill in 41.6 seconds. For safety reasons F1 cars are no longer allowed to do official timed runs, and will often focus on demonstrations that are spectacular rather than fast. In 2006 Heikki Kovalainen completed the course in a Renault R25 F1 car and was unofficially timed below 40 seconds.Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider 16M Read More

New images of Jaguar’s lime green XKR ‘Goodwood Special’ The UK's historic Goodwood Festival of Speed has just completed another running of its famous show and hillclimb events, and today Jaguar has released new images of its unique XKR 'Goodwood Special' that made a showing at the event. The car, finished in a custom lime green paint scheme, is described as a one-off to explore the harder side of the XKR's character and allow engineers to explore some performance boundaries. Whether this is an indication of development of the long-rumored ‘XKR-R’ remains to be seen but we can always dream.

Whether this is an indication of development of the long-rumored ‘XKR-R’ remains to be seen but we can always dream. Although no details have been released, the Goodwood Special XKR is pegged to have an 'unspecified' power upgrade on top of the standard 2010 XKR's 5.0L supercharged V8. That means more than 503hp (375kW) on tap, likely as much as 550hp (410kW) or more. Some things that we do know is that it features a louder exhaust, 21in wheels and a lowered ride height. One lucky attendee got a chance to take a ride up the Goodwood hillclimb with Mike Cross, Jaguar's chief engineer, behind the wheel. Also on show for the past weekend event Goodwood event was the fastest Jaguar ever – the recently unveiled XFR Prototype that made its record-breaking run at the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah last November, reaching a stunning top speed of 225.675mph. In keeping with this year's endurance theme, Jaguar's illustrious heritage was also represented in the form of the 1950’s era Le Mans winners – the D-type and the C-type. Jaguar also fielded the unique XJ13 designed for endurance racing in the 1960s but which never competed – yet is still considered by many to be one of the most beautiful racing cars of all time.2010 Jaguar XF-R Official photo leak2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed Jaguar XKR Coupe Read More
  • Porsche bringing collection of legendary 917 race cars to Goodwood

Porsche bringing collection of legendary 917 race cars to Goodwood The Porsche 917 is one of the most stark raving mad automotive creations ever dreamt up by humanity, offering a performance level that remains as impressive today as it was during the 1970s. That historic car and its success at Le Mans will be playing a central role in Porsche's activities at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.

Many variations of the 917 were produced, and in some iterations the car's turbocharged flat-12-cylinder engine generated up to 1,580hp (1,180kW) - enough to rocket the car to 60mph in 2.7 seconds and on to a top speed of more than 240mph (390km/h).

Alongside the winning cars on display will also be some of the drivers that took them to victory, including Richard Attwood, former F1 driver and 1970 Le Mans winner for Porsche, driving a 917; sports car racing legend Brian Redman will be behind the wheel of the 917/30 CanAm racer; David Piper, who bought a 917 new from the factory in 1969, will be driving his own car; and Jackie Oliver, who won Le Mans in 1969, will be reunited with an evocative Gulf-liveried 917. Perhaps the most evocative design on a 917 on display at Goodwood this year is a 917/20 Coupe affectionately known as the 'Pink Pig'. It features a pink livery with the German names for various cuts of meat and their outlines all across the bodywork, and was designed largely as an aerodynamic exercise to decrease drag, explaining its somewhat odd-ball looks. Audi celebrating 100th anniversary with huge sculpture at Goodwood Centennial celebrations have been a common occurrence of late as the industry as a whole begins to push past the 100-year mark. This year marks Audi's 100th, and it's celebrating at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, in part with the 115ft (35m) 2009 Festival of Speed Central Feature (pictured).

This isn't the first time Audi has celebrated a major milestone at Goodwood, but it is the largest center piece to date.

Centennial celebrations have been a common occurrence of late as the industry as a whole begins to push past the 100-year mark. Designed by the award-winning Gerry Judah, Lord March’s evergreen creative collaborator, the sculpture features two Audi cars – the legendary 1937 Auto Union streamliner as well as the just launched R8 V10 sports car suspended in the air, at either end of a dramatic ‘swoosh’ of tyre tracks, as if they are driving off into the sky. The sculpture is the latest in a tradition of central displays at the Festival. Each year Judah honors the featured marque with its own central display but this year’s is something special. “I wanted to design something iconic because this year is Audi’s 100th anniversary,” explains Judah. “The sculpture had to have a celebratory theme and it also had to encompass the qualities of the Audi brand: sporty, prestigious and progressive. “I drew about 20 ideas and some had elaborate bridges with vaulted arches but somehow they didn’t have quite the right style. I then had a flash of inspiration and designed this ‘swoosh’ with a car at either end to represent Audi’s 100-year history." The complex steel structure weighs in at 44 tons (40 tonnes), and required 12 men four full weeks of fabrication. As well as the Audi sculpture, the Festival will showcase Audi’s most important cars and drivers from its illustrious century – from the days of the Grand Prix Auto Union ‘Silver Arrows’ of the thirties, through the ‘quattro years’ of the Eighties, right up to the present day. A brief timeline below documents what Audi thinks are some of its seminal moments over the past 100 years. 1909 - First car to bear the Audi name: the Audi Type A (2.6 liter) 1935 - The Auto Union B-type wins the Italian Grand Prix at Monza 1937 - The Type C Stromlinenwagen first to break the 400 kph land speed record on the Autobahn 1938 - First to perform systematic crash tests bringing added safety and reassurance for drivers 1980 - First to introduce a permanent four-wheel drive rally car – the Audi Quattro with its turbocharged five-cylinder engine 1989 - First Audi with TDI – the Audi 100 shows the world the remarkable power and economy with TDI 1994 - First to use the Aluminum Space Frame – tough and corrosion resistant, this provided the bodyshell for the Audi A8, making it far lighter than traditional designs 2006 - First to win Le Mans with a diesel-powered car 2009 - First appearance of the Audi R8 V10 – the new 10-cylinder performance car which is capable of 0-62 mph in just 3.9 secondsAudi celebrates 100th anniversary with huge sculpture at Goodwood Read More

Both of the concepts, incidentally, were designed by Bertone. One of the concepts, the 1968 Alfa Carabo concept marks a revolutionary stage in supercar design, with its hydropneumatic-powered gull-wing doors and multi-coloured one way glass windows. The other concept is the 1978 Najavo, which represents a concerted effort for a new aerodynamics focussed direction in sporty coupe design. While this year Alfa Romeo is looking to its past heritage, next year for its centenary the automaker is expected to release a high-performance ‘GTA’ version of its stunning 8C Competizione supercar.
