Hyundai Genesis Coupe Goes Digital For Forza Motorsport 3

Video games are, it seems, a natural companion to modern car culture. Pros use them--or simulators that resemble them--to train for tracks they haven't seen or don't see often. Amateurs use them to imagine what it'd be like to be a pro. And people of all stripes play just to have fun.

So the introduction of a set of special-edition Hyundai Genesis Coupes to the digital world of Forza Motorsport 3 makes a lot of sense in terms of reaching potential buyers. The cars in the game won't bear a whole lot of resemblance to the cars on dealership lots, though.

So the introduction of a set of special-edition Hyundai Genesis Coupes to the digital world of Forza Motorsport 3 makes a lot of sense in terms of reaching potential buyers. The cars in the game won't bear a whole lot of resemblance to the cars on dealership lots, though. The three digital Coupes are the Rhys Millen Racing Red Bull Genesis Coupe, the HKS Genesis Coupe and a one-of-a-kind in-game Genesis Coupe. The Genesis will also get its own race series, plus a tool to let gamers upload their best Genesis Coupe photos and videos from in-game customization and racing action. The hope is that the tie-up will increase awareness among the enthusiasts and younger buyers that tend to gravitate toward the Forza series of video games. Sound like marketing garbage? It may be marketing gold: Hyundai says teens in the U.S. wield $172 billion in spending power on their own and directly influence another $565 billion in parental spending with their input. That's a whole lot of spending going on. But regardless of what you think about the marketing ploy or the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe itself, it's easy to get behind carmakers that sponsor and help provide realism to games as enjoyable as Forza Motorsport 3. The game was launched last week, and is available for the Xbox360 platform. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe vehicle package will be available as a free downloadable add-on through Xbox LIVE starting November 17. [Hyundai] Read More

A 'track-tuned' suspension and Torsen-type limited-slip differential offer improved handling over the standard Coupe, while R-Spec badging lets onlookers know what's under all the aftermarket gear. Other standard elements--not so common on a stripped-down track day car, but handy for a daily driver--include keyless entry, front, side and side curtain airbags, active front head restraints, air conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power windows and door locks, an MP3-capable six-speaker stereo system with iPod/USB conncetivity and projector beam headlamps. The basic package offers as much performance as the Track model, but at a $3,000 discount, freeing up some cash for whatever the buyer might like to add--perhaps a larger turbo, intercooler and associated electronics, or maybe a serious audio/video system and a unique paintjob. Whatever the mods, the R-Spec goes the extra mile to draw in the tuner market. Only sales will show how successful Hyundai has been. The new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec will make its official U.S. debut at next week’s 2009 SEMA Auto Show in Last Vegas before going on sale nationwide soon after. [Hyundai] Read More

These high-performance parts will be displayed on the "GReddy X-Gen Street Genesis Coupe" show car at the SEMA event and will go on sale immediately after. The vehicle from GReddy, based on the 2.0-liter turbocharged model, is designed for the enthusiast looking to make modifications for daily driving or a weekend at the track. Some of the performance modifications planned include a turbo upgrade kit, a large front-mounted intercooler, a cat-back exhaust system, a racing downpipe, adjustable coil-over suspension, and GReddy six-piston front and four-piston rear brake calipers. Styling modifications to the GReddy Genesis Coupe will include an Aero lip spoiler, carbon-fiber hood, aggressive rear spoiler, Volk Racing G2 wheels and Toyo performance tires. According to Hyundai, the car will develop upwards of 350-horsepower and 320-pound-feet of torque, which should be enough for a 0-60 mph time of less than six seconds. Following SEMA, GReddy plans to make additional engine modifications, pushing horsepower to nearly 500. Read More

Hyundai’s U.S. chief sees Genesis nameplate becoming new luxury sub-brand Hyundai has traditionally been recognized as a maker of affordable hatchbacks and compact cars but in the past couple of years we’ve seen the quality and design of its cars improve greatly. At January’s Detroit Auto Show we saw Hyundai win the coveted North American Car of the Year award for its Genesis Sedan, and initial reviews of the sporty Genesis Coupe are showing good signs. Hyundai then launched its Equus flagship saloon in its home market and teased the U.S. with the presentation of the car at this month’s New York Auto Show. Now, the carmaker’s U.S. chief John Krafcik has hinted at the launch of a brand new luxury sub-brand. Speaking with Ward’s Auto, Krafcik said Hyundai may one day use its Genesis nameplate for a new luxury brand. “It would be like Lexus,” he explained. The new ‘Genesis ‘ models would be sold through regular Hyundai dealerships but in a separate section – similar to what Toyota does with Scion and Mercedes Benz does with Maybach. The launch of a new brand would also bode well for Hyundai’s plans to offer a new range of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles in the coming years, as well as the introduction of an in-house designed 8-speed automatic transmission.Hyundai VI Equus replacementHyundai Genesis Sedan Read More

  • Genesis Coupe 2.0T dyno test hints at 225hp+ true output

Genesis Coupe 2.0T dyno test hints at 225hp+ true output Hyundai's new turbocharged 2.0L Genesis Coupe has had import tuner fanboys foaming at mouth, and their more resevered cohorts awaiting with interest, for months now. As the car begins to make the press rounds, it's starting to look like it may have more under the hood than the 210hp promised by Hyundai.

The latest evidence of the 2.0T's potential understatement is a dyno test from Edmunds. The data shows 197hp (147kW) to the wheels, with actual delivered torque coming to 227lb-ft (307Nm). That's well beyond what you might expect given the car's 210hp (156kW) crank horsepower rating.

In fact, running the numbers through typical drivetrain loss calculations reveals that the engine is probably putting out close to 225hp at the crank (15% loss) and could even be reaching as high as 236hp (20% loss). Taken together with the highly restrictive exhaust system noticed by the testers (a deliberate kink is placed in the pipe immediately after the catalytic converters) there's ample room for improving on the flow of air - and therefore power, especially in a turbo engine - with simple bolt-on modifications, making the Genesis Coupe 2.0T even more of a tuner delight than had been expected.
