B&B takes the lid off 500hp Volkwagen Eos Volkswagen's Eos is something of a misfit - more luxurious than most of VW's lineup, but not as nice as the A5 Cabrio, and not quite powerful enough from the factory to run with the likes of the Mercedes and BMW competition. But it's definitely a step ahead of most of the American and Japanese offerings. B&B have recognized this and come up with a tuning program to give the Eos the 'go' to match its 'show'.

Four levels of tune are available, from moderately serious (360hp/265kW) to completely insane (500hp/368kW), with intermediary steps of 400hp (294kW) and 450hp (331kW) for those wanting something in between. The power comes by way of an upgraded intercooler and turbo setup, new injectors, higher flow fuel pump and a re-tune. It's hard to imagine the need for 500hp in an Eos, but with figures like 0-62mph (100km/h) in 4.2 seconds and 0-124mph (200km/h) in 13.5 seconds with a top speed of 191mph (308km/h) it's not so much need as it is want. To help rein in all that power, B&B has also fitted a range up handling upgrades including an adjustable coilover kit and custom six or eight-piston brakes. Wrapping sticky rubber around 18in or 19in wheels helps keep the shiny side up, and a full Caractere body kit - B&B's partner in tuning - helps dress the car up to match its new-found power.B&B Volkswagen Eos Read More

The Eos White Night features a monochromatic theme, with black and white exterior and interior treatment including a Candy White roof accented by black features such as the grille, side mirrors and edging on the convertible top. Inside the theme is carried forward via black Nappa leather with white piping. Under the hood lies a 3.2L V6 rated at 250hp (184kW). The Scirocco Collector's Edition will be limited to 100 units, and also features the same high-contrast black-and-white theme. Bearing more white than its Eos counterpart, the Scirocco features an Oryx White exterior, xenon headlights, a panoramic sunroof and polished 19in alloy wheels. The interior is also clad in white, with a selection of premium options befitting a Collector's Edition car. The special-edition Scirocco is powered by a standard 200hp (147kW) 2.0L turbocharged engine and features a DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Also on display are a range of aerodynamic upgrades for the new-generation Golf, Passat CC and Scirocco. The Golf gets a new pair of alloy rim choices in 17in and 18in sizes, a carbon-fiber-look B-pillar cover, and a full front, side and rear aero kit. The same basic package is available for both the Passat CC and Scirocco, and will be available via retail channels in early 2009 in Europe. Coming a close second was BMW’s 328i cabrio, followed by the Saab 9-3 and Volvo C70, which along with the Eos were all rated as ‘Very Good’. The three remaining vehicles, the Pontiac G6, Mitsubishi Eclipse, and Chrysler Sebring, posted only ‘Good’ scores and thus were at the bottom of judge’s rankings. Five of the seven cars tested have retracting hard tops, while two have traditional fabric tops but all were power-operated. Each had their benefits and disadvantages, and these were taken into account during voting. For example, folding hard tops improve visibility and security but they take up considerable trunk space when open and can't be operated on the move. The magazine recommends just three of the vehicles in the test, the Eos, 328i, and C70. The 9-3 and G6 are not recommended because of below average reliability, while the Eclipse and Sebring didn’t score high enough to be recommended. Read More
