New Preview Of Glickenhaus Ferrari P4/5 Competizione

It's been almost four years since James Glickenhaus commissioned his custom Pininfarina-penned Ferrari Enzo-based P4/5, but the excitement has begun to build back up to a head after a cryptic message on an enthusiast forum hinting at a possible endurance racer based on the car. Today a new rendering of what the car might look like from Michiel Van Den Brink has surfaced.

Glickenhaus himself posted to a forum in late September, saying simply, "I am seriously investigating a proposal to make P 4/5 Competizione and enter her in a major 24 hour race. There are a LOT of stars that would have to align for this to happen but it's not...

There are a LOT of stars that would have to align for this to happen but it's not impossible..." That teaser was then followed up by a hint that the car could show up with a "serious effort at a major race" with a "chance to do well." That narrows the possibilities of endurance races somewhat, including the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring. Featured in the thread is a rendering of what a racing P4/5 might look like, also created by Michiel Van Den Brink, a small version of which is included here. The blue livery on the car in that image is an homage to the legendary North American Racing Team, or NART, used to promote Ferrari endurance racing in the U.S. between 1958 and 1982. The information and discussion is buried in a nearly 300-page forum thread over at FerrariChat, but the magic starts at around page 285 if you want to have a read for yourself. For the latest discussion, there's a newer 15-page thread also at FerrariChat here. For Michiel Van Den Brink's high-resolution renderings, plus a complete run-down on what will need to happen for this project to come to reality, head on over to his post at Coachbuild. Read More

Edo Competition Turns The Ferrari Enzo Into Street-Legal XX Evolution

Despite only 400 Ferrari Enzos being produced in total (not including the even more extreme FXX and FXX Evolution models), German tuner Edo Competition has managed to turn the ultra-rare supercar into a street-legal version of the FXX Evolution. For anyone unfamiliar with the FXX and FXX Evolution, the cars are a development test-bed for new technologies that will eventually filter across to Ferrari’s road cars. Those few lucky owners are given the chance to drive it regularly on Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in Italy, where the automaker’s own engineers compile useful data from the track sessions to help develop future models. For this reason, the FXX cars were never intended to be driven on public roads. That was never going to stop Edo Competition’s founder Edo Karabegovic, who saw modifying them as a challenge. One year ago we saw Edo Competition modify the FXX to make it street legal and now the company has taken the Enzo and essentially converted it into a street-legal version of the FXX Evolution. A bump in displacement from 6.0 to 6.3-liters, new camshafts, new titanium valve spring retainers and connecting rods, modified cylinder heads, new high performance exhaust headers, high flow catalytic converters, mufflers and air filters: that's the scope of Edo Competition's engine modifications. The standard hydraulic tappets are replaced with newly developed solid tappets, enabling the 12 cylinder engine to rev to an incredible 9,600 rpm. Additionally, the intake system of the V-12 was modified, a new high performance clutch--available with “strada” or “pista” friction pads--and a more powerful oil pump were installed. The power output is increased by 180 to 840 horsepower. Without mufflers more than 860 horsepower is possible. The maximum torque of 575 pound-feet is available at 5,800 rpm. While the power output is increased, the Enzo's weight is decreased by a respectable 220 pounds. The result in numerical terms is that the Edo-prepped “Enzo XX Evolution” accelerates from 0 -62 mph in 3.2 seconds, 124 mph in 9.0 seconds and 186 mph in just 19 seconds. The top speed exceeds 242 mph. The acoustical side of things are obviously not being neglected. A stainless steel muffler featuring remote-controlled butterfly valves is available on request. This setup lets the driver switch the high performance exhaust between two different sound levels. In terms of the drivetrain, while the production Enzo takes 110 milliseconds for gear shifts, the Edo Enzo XX Evolution shift times are reduced to an incredible 60 milliseconds. For comparison, an F1 car shifts in 40 milliseconds. Other mods include a race-spec suspension set-up from KW Automotive that features low-friction 3-way adjustable shock absorbers, tire pressure monitoring systems, Edo Competition wheels, and several aerodynamic aids. A test day with an instructor, mechanics, data logging, transport and hospitality is included in the conversion package. Read More
  • Edo Competition tunes the Ferrari Enzo - again

Edo Competition tunes the Ferrari Enzo - again For the few out there who may not have heard of Edo Competition, suffice to say that even in the mad world of tuning the firm is looked upon as the sort of company who occasionally may take things a little too far - such as its modifications to the ultra-rare track-only Ferrari FXX development vehicle to make it road-legal in Germany. Other such shenanigans include tuning the Maserati MC12 to a blistering top speed of 231mph and bumping the Ferrari Enzo's power up to an impressive 700hp (522kW).

For the few out there who may not have heard of Edo Competition, suffice to say that even in the mad world of tuning the firm is looked upon as the sort of company who occasionally may take things a little too far - such as its modifications to the ultra-rare track-only Ferrari FXX development vehicle to make it road-legal in Germany. Other such shenanigans include tuning the Maserati MC12 to a blistering top speed of 231mph and bumping the Ferrari Enzo's power up to an impressive 700hp (522kW). It's this last project with the Ferrari Enzo that sees us doing yet another story on Edo Competition, because apparently increasing the power in one of the world's fastest cars to 700hp (522kW) is still not quite enough for Edo, especially when it has just figured out a way to increase that figure to 800hp (648kW). This magical figure is achieved by extensively modifying the Enzo to increase power by almost 150hp (112kW) from the standard car's 650hp (485kW) figure. New steel cylinders and pistons, used similarly in the Ferrari FXX, make an appearance, along with new camshafts, valve springs, connecting rods, piston pipes exhaust manifolds and a high-flow catalytic converter. Along with a new air-filter, fuel cooling system, clutch, bearings, oil pump and gaskets, the modification list is extensive and, by extension, very expensive as well. But for your money you will get some fairly impressive features - including a top speed of over 236mph, and the ability to sprint from standstill to 186mph in just 19 seconds. To put that in perspective, the Mercedes-Mclaren SLR will take around 30 seconds to hit 186mph, while the 1,001hp (746kW) Bugatti Veyron is just a couple of seconds quicker than the Edo-prepped Enzo.Edo Competition Ferrari Enzo XX Read More

  • Jay Kay's Enzo gets justice: chef to pay for repair, spend 5 months in jail

Jay Kay's Enzo gets justice: chef to pay for repair, spend 5 months in jail In what appears to be a recession-fueled craze sweeping the world, yet another high-end sports car was attacked by an angry individual, this time a Ferrari Enzo supercar owned by Jamiroquai lead singer and famous Top Gear guest Jay Kay. Over the past couple of months we’ve seen reports of imported vehicles being damaged in Michigan by individuals upset over the state of the Detroit 3, and in March a number of luxury vehicles and sports cars in Germany were attacked by protesters angered by the current economic crisis.

In what appears to be a recession-fueled craze sweeping the world, yet another high-end sports car was attacked by an angry individual, this time a Ferrari Enzo supercar owned by Jamiroquai lead singer and famous Top Gear guest Jay Kay. Over the past couple of months we’ve seen reports of imported vehicles being damaged in Michigan by individuals upset over the state of the Detroit 3, and in March a number of luxury vehicles and sports cars in Germany were attacked by protesters angered by the current economic crisis. The attack on Jay Kay's Enzo, however, has no ideological reason behind it. Instead, the attack was the result of a drunken row between Jay Kay and pastry chef Aaron Billington. The 21-year-old chef has since admitted to the attack and now has been sentenced by the Ipswich courts. The penalty: to pay for the repair of the Enzo, and to spend 20 weeks in jail. The black Ferrari Enzo was parked at a hotel in the UK and, among other damage, had one of its windows smashed in. The tally of injuries to the million dollar supercar is estimated to be around $42,000, reports the Associated Press. Luckily for Jay Kay, as the owner of a number of exotics, the singer won’t have to catch a bus or train anytime soon. Some of the other fast cars in his collection include a Ferrari F40 and F50, a Lamborghini Diablo, and even a Mercedes Benz G-Class. Read More
  • Ferrari's lineup goes green and practical in 2009

Ferrari's lineup goes green and practical in 2009 The end of the 2008 production year is drawing near and the industry, carmakers and consumers alike, are looking forward to what 2009 will bring. The desolate global economic situation presents few bright spots, but Ferrari's perennially brilliant Prancing Horse will offer some new features and refresh some familiar ones before the next year is out.

The end of the 2008 production year is drawing near and the industry, carmakers and consumers alike, are looking forward to what 2009 will bring. The desolate global economic situation presents few bright spots, but Ferrari's perennially brilliant Prancing Horse will offer some new features and refresh some familiar ones before the next year is out. Ferrari's blockbuster hit - the California - is already out, however, and nothing to rival it is scheduled for a 2009 debut. Though the folding-hardtop 'daily driver' Ferrari is already public knowledge, the actual customer cars won't begin delivery until mid-2009, so there's still much to look forward to, however. Powered by a 460hp (343kW) 4.3L V8 with the company's first implementation of direct-injection and the all-new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the California is a technological tour de force that also brings a very slightly greener tinge to the lineup. The efficiency-enhancing effects of the direct-injection and dual-clutch technology are well known, though it's hard to believe the California is tuned for anything but performance, daily driver or not. Another bright spot in 2009 is the expected redesign of the F430, though we'll have to wait until the later part of the year to see the results, reports Automotive News. In addition to gaining the direct injection and dual-clutch transmission, the F430 will also get a new aluminum chassis. A test mule has been spotted, and though it's not certain what exactly the car is, one possibility is that it's the next-gen F430. Rumors of a possible Spyder version of the 430 Scuderia - the track-focused hyper-430 - have been flying about wildly in recent months, but as yet there has been no official confirmation of the car. Further down the line, Ferrari is thought to be working on a successor to the Ferrari Enzo. Taking inspiration from the eco-conscious FXX Millechilli concept and not due until 2010 or 2011, the car is still little more than speculation, despite spy shots of a test mule on the streets of Maranello. Whatever the nature of the next Ferrari limited-edition hypercar, it will almost certainly be reined in from its V12 past. The pinch of emissions and efficiency regulations in the EU and elsewhere are being felt even at the highest levels of the industry, and Ferrari could be backed into using a twin-turbo V8 - though a forced induction V12 reportedly remains an option as well. Final output will be between 700hp (522kW) in twin-turbo V8 form and 750-800hp (560-596kW) in twin-turbo V12 form. About 300 of the cars are to be built, with starting prices in the neighborhood of $500,000. Also taking a longer view of things are the updates to the 612 Scaglietti, due for replacement in 2011, and the 599 GTB Fiorano, which will get a retractable hardtop model in 2011 or 2012. The Fiorano has a year-long waiting list at the moment, however, so purchasing for the new folding hardtop variants will likely start sometime in late 2009 or early 2010. Both models are now eligible for the unique One-to-One personalization program via a worldwide chain of ateliers.Ferrari F430 Scuderia SpiderFerrari Enzo successor spy shotsFerrari test mule spiedFerrari California live photos Read More
