Some of the upgrades in the 2010 E-Class range include: the Night View Assist Plus pedestrian recognition option that's migrated down from the S-Class; Attention Assist, which helps monitor and alert drowsy drivers; and new adaptive headlights that use a camera on the windshield to re-direct headlight beams away from oncoming traffic when necessary, improving visibility and safety for everyone. Other standard features are what you've come to expect from Mercedes-Benz and luxury carmakers in general: seven airbags, belt tensioners, active head restraints, an active hood for pedestrian protection, and a wide range of interior options and high-tech entertainment and information systems. Mercedes-Benz Unveils E63 AMG Estate

The all-new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has reached showrooms in most parts of the globe, and now we are just a couple of months away from the launch of the ‘Estate’ wagon version. Today, however, at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, Mercedes has unveiled the high-performance E63 AMG Estate.

Mercedes and its AMG engineers have tested prototypes for the E63 Estate extensively--even recruiting former McLaren F1 ace Mika Häkkinen and race driver Klaus Ludwig to finetune it--and the end result is the fastest and most powerful version of the E-Class Estate yet.

Like the E63 Sedan, the new AMG Estate distinguishes itself from the standard E-Class Estate wagons with a newly developed sports suspension system with electronically controlled damping, revised front suspension settings and unique exterior and interior design. The vehicle also develops 525 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque from its hand-built 6.2-liter V-8 engine and accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 4.6 seconds. It also offers a maximum luggage compartment capacity of 69 cubic-feet and a relatively impressive fuel economy rating of 18.3 mpg. Sending power rearward is AMG’s new SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. It offers four driving modes: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual), which can be selected using a rotary electronic switch in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Partial suppression of individual cylinders by interrupting ignition and injection during gearshifts under full load lets the transmission change gear even faster than it could otherwise. In M mode, the MCT swaps the gears in just 100 milliseconds. A more direct steering feel comes courtesy of the all-new speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering. The steering ratio of 14:1 is 22% more direct than in the standard production models, while a more rigid steering column plus the reconfigured characteristic mapping of the speed-sensitive servo assistance ensure better steering precision and improved road contact. Handling is also improved thanks to the addition of 18-inch light-alloy wheels. Lightweight forged 19 inch AMG light-alloy wheels remain an option. Other highlights of the exterior include wider fenders, unique LED daytime running lights and bi-xenon headlights. Sadly, the North American launch of the new E-Class Estate will bring only the E350 4matic version next June, and so far no other E-Class wagon variants are planned for American sale. Read More

The next-generation Mercedes Benz E-Class Estate has again been spotted in testing but this time the prototype is for the high-performance AMG version of the executive wagon. The images were taken as the test vehicle was testing near Germany’s Nurburgring circuit and reveal the final shape of the car, with only the finer details being masked by the black camouflage material.

A giveaway that this is the AMG version is the exposed rear bumper with quad tailpipes. Other details include perforated brake discs with oversized calipers.

Mercedes-Benz and its AMG engineers have been testing prototypes for the E-Class extensively--even recruiting former McLaren F1 ace Mika Häkkinen and race driver Klaus Ludwig to fine tune the upcoming car. Despite current concerns about global warming and a possible end to the horsepower war between Germany’s in-house tuners, the new E63 Estate will continue with the potent hand-built 6.2-liter V-8, as well as the same mechanical upgrades offered in the E63 Sedan. This means an output of 518 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, with all that thrust funneled through a 7-speed MCT dual-clutch transmission. This should ensure a 0-60 mph time of around 4.4 seconds but top speed will still be limited to 155mph. Highlights of the exterior include 17mm wider fenders, unique LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights, and 19 inch alloy wheels shod with 285 mm rubber in the rear (18 inch wheels come standard). So far Mercedes-Benz has only confirmed the E350 Estate model for the U.S., however, if demand is strong enough hopefully the high-performance E63 family hauler will come too. Expect to see the vehicle make its debut in the first half of next year. Read More

Today, however, Mercedes has released full details and images for the new model. Mercedes has previously confirmed that the wagon will make its world debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show before going on sale in Europe by the end of the year. The North American launch will bring only the E350 4matic version in June of 2010 as a 2011 model. So far no other E-Class wagon variants are planned for American sale. A sport-configuration variant will be available for the first time on the U.S. E-Class wagon, however, bringing a special grille, more aggressive front and rear fascias, twin trapezoidal exhaust pipes, 'twist' side rocker panels, cross-drilled brake discs with colored rotors and five-spoke 17in alloy wheels. Optional 18in alloys are available as an AMG wheel package upgrade. With a load capacity of up to 1,950 liters, the E-Class Estate (length/width/ height: 4,895/1,854/1,471 mm) sets the standard in its class. Furthermore, the elbow width in the rear has been increased by 50 mm to 1,505 mm over the previous model, while rear headroom with has also improved by 50 mm to 1,010 mm. Like the sedan, the range of engines available worldwide for the new wagon will comprise four, six and eight-cylinder units with outputs from 100 kW/136 hp to 386 kW/525 hp – the top end model being the E63 from AMG. The four-cylinder engines are newly developed direct-injection units, which develop a higher output and torque than the comparable V6-engines of the preceding series despite a smaller displacement. The top model in the new E-Class diesel range is the six-cylinder E350 CDI with an output of 170 kW/231 hp, which uses 0.5L per 100km less fuel than the previous E320 CDI. Along with the debut of the new wagon, Mercedes will also be launching two new engines for the E-Class range under the E200 CGI and E200 CDI guises.2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate wagon Read More
  • Mercedes holding off on E-Class cabrio, wagon

Mercedes holding off on E-Class cabrio, wagon Announcements of the delays of new car models are almost more numerous than the new cars themselves, and it seems no one is immune to the practice. Mercedes-Benz today revealed it won't be releasing the new E-Class Cabrio (spied here) at Frankfurt this fall, and the E-Class Wagon will be delayed a year as well.

The Cabrio decision makes sense regardless of the market condition - it's hard to launch a convertible in the fall. So instead, Mercedes will wait until Spring of 2010 and the Geneva Motor Show to reveal its E-Class Cabrio, according to a report from Auto Motor & Sport.

So instead, Mercedes will wait until Spring of 2010 and the Geneva Motor Show to reveal its E-Class Cabrio, according to a report from Auto Motor & Sport. The wagon, on the other hand, won't be seeing its debut until 2012, a year after its planned release in 2011. The justification there is that the car is more of a niche vehicle, and until the market regains some volume, it won't have a legitimate business case for production. In the mean time, however, we will have the E-Class sedan and coupe to sate us with the company's brash new styling direction, and Mercedes will have time to bank some sales in preparation for better times ahead.2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class Cabrio spy shots2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class Read More
