    Spy Shots: 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible

The previous Mercedes-Benz CLK is something of an enigma--built around the C-Class platform, styled like the E-Class, and priced in between the two, the car sits in its own unique segment and has no direct competition from its rivals. Its sales history has been a strong success, especially in the U.S., but the car is on its way out, being replaced by the recently launched 2010 E-Class Coupe and upcoming 2011 E-Class Convertible due in the middle of next year.

Latest spy shots show an undisguised prototype of the Convertible model testing in Germany, and as expected it draws heavily from the recent ConceptFASCINATION. The car will be about four inches longer than the CLK Convertible that it replaces and it sticks with a traditional folding soft top. The engine lineup should mirror the Coupe, which means four, six and eight-cylinder units with outputs from 200 to 382 horsepower--the top end model being the E550. The decision to move the CLK to the E-Class platform will allow Mercedes to introduce a new entry-level coupe and convertible based on the C-Class, finally providing the automaker with a direct competitor to BMW’s popular 3-Series two-door models. You can see a preview of such a car in our previous story by clicking here. The story doesn’t end there, however, as Mercedes is also expected to launch a new ‘shooting brake’ model based on the ConceptFASCINATION, although no official details about its release have been mentioned. Early look at Lumma Design Tuning Kit For 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

German tuner Lumma Design is renowned for its work with Mercedes-Benz models, ranging from its aerodynamic upgrades to its mechanical modifications that offer alternatives to the stock standard AMG treatment most high-performance Mercs are subject to.

Mercedes' new 2010 E-Class Sedan, of course, means that Lumma Design has a new toy to play with and the tuner hasn't wasted anytime on its work with the car. Set to go on sale later this year, the Lumma Design E-Class is expected to add some more 'exciting' elements to the ordinary four-door.

On the outside, a stainless-steel mesh grille is accompanied by a new front spoiler and integrated daytime running lights. Side skirts continue the aggressive trend set by the new front spoiler, while at the back an impressively sized rear-diffuser accompanies two fat exhaust pipes and a small bootlid spoiler. Besides the complete aerodynamic kit, the vehicle offers exclusive interior fittings, more performance and the intelligent suspension lowering system. According to Lumma Design, the control unit of the suspension detects the road conditions and adjusts the remaining spring range continuously, meaning that the car will always be perfectly tuned for wherever it's driving. New wheels measure in at 20 inch. Power hikes are offered across the board but of most interest is the modifications done to the V-8-powered E550. Peak output has been boosted to 450 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Previous cars modified by Lumma Design can been seen by clicking here and here. Read More

The all-new Mercedes Benz E-Class has now reached showrooms in most parts of the globe, and now we are just a couple of months away from the launch of the ‘Estate’ wagon version. Today, however, Mercedes has released full details and images for the new model. Mercedes has previously confirmed that the wagon will make its world debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show before going on sale in Europe by the end of the year. The North American launch will bring only the E350 4matic version in June of 2010 as a 2011 model. So far no other E-Class wagon variants are planned for American sale. A sport-configuration variant will be available for the first time on the U.S. E-Class wagon, however, bringing a special grille, more aggressive front and rear fascias, twin trapezoidal exhaust pipes, 'twist' side rocker panels, cross-drilled brake discs with colored rotors and five-spoke 17in alloy wheels. Optional 18in alloys are available as an AMG wheel package upgrade. With a load capacity of up to 1,950 liters, the E-Class Estate (length/width/ height: 4,895/1,854/1,471 mm) sets the standard in its class. Furthermore, the elbow width in the rear has been increased by 50 mm to 1,505 mm over the previous model, while rear headroom with has also improved by 50 mm to 1,010 mm. Like the sedan, the range of engines available worldwide for the new wagon will comprise four, six and eight-cylinder units with outputs from 100 kW/136 hp to 386 kW/525 hp – the top end model being the E63 from AMG. The four-cylinder engines are newly developed direct-injection units, which develop a higher output and torque than the comparable V6-engines of the preceding series despite a smaller displacement. The top model in the new E-Class diesel range is the six-cylinder E350 CDI with an output of 170 kW/231 hp, which uses 0.5L per 100km less fuel than the previous E320 CDI. Along with the debut of the new wagon, Mercedes will also be launching two new engines for the E-Class range under the E200 CGI and E200 CDI guises.2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate wagon Read More
  • Next AMG Black Series coupe will pay more attention to grace than power

Next AMG Black Series coupe will pay more attention to grace than power Finding a way to make productive use of more than 500hp in a standard two-wheel drive configuration is a tough thing - at least without going to ridiculous tire and wheel sizes. So the next generation of super-performance coupe from Mercedes-Benz's AMG division won't focus on pushing the outer boundaries of power. Instead, it will focus on something often left behind: agility.

Getting power to the ground, then taming it through the curves, will ultimately make for a faster car than one that's simply outrageously powerful. Just ask a Lotus driver.

But that's not to say that the next AMG Black Series coupe will be gutless - far from it.... Finding a way to make productive use of more than 500hp in a standard two-wheel drive configuration is a tough thing - at least without going to ridiculous tire and wheel sizes. Getting power to the ground, then taming it through the curves, will ultimately make for a faster car than one that's simply outrageously powerful. Just ask a Lotus driver. But that's not to say that the next AMG Black Series coupe will be gutless - far from it. Expect at least 500hp, as the next C63 AMG - currently the least powerful AMG model - will sit just above the 500hp mark as well, according to Autocar. Five hundred horsepower is more than enough to provide abundant rubber-burning fun, but not so much as to make the car useless below fourth gear. And with judicious use of engine electronics and technological wizardry, it could even return relatively economical fuel consumption and emissions figures. Based around the E-Class Coupe (pictured), the next Black Series will supplant the AMG E-Class Coupe, and instead focus on delivering the ultimate in balanced handling, power and speed. The current Black Series SL65 AMG is a brute with some serious capability, but its 4,125lb weight makes for less impressive transitional performance than its spec sheet might indicate. How Mercedes plans to achieve this lithe yet powerful beast isn't yet clear, but expect to see advanced materials including extensive use of carbon fiber to save weight.2010 Mercedes-Benz E-class Coupe Official Read More
