Ford Planning Lincoln And Mercury Versions Of Kuga Crossover

Lincoln will be taking a new approach to what sort of vehicles it produces in the future, with plans to downsize its lineup in the wake of flailing sales of the once-popular Navigator SUV and other large cars.

The new approach will see the luxury brand focusing on cars that will likely be the smallest Lincolns ever, an approach that some other luxury rivals have shied away from in fear of a North American market not ready for smaller cars just yet.

For the immediate future, Lincoln could be planning a number of surprises to help return the brand to prominence. Spearheading this approach is rumored to be a new compact car based on a Ford platform, most likely the one in the upcoming global Focus. Whether or not Lincoln is sure of such a move remains uncertain--the brand has already explored the possibility of smaller cars for city dwellers via its concepts, but turning them into production vehicles could be a risk that Lincoln is not willing to take. Meanwhile, a new compact crossover based on the European Ford Kuga is set to arrive in showrooms by late 2011, with production tipped to start in Ford’s Louisville, Kentucky. Redesigned versions of the Kuga will be sold as both Lincolns and Mercurys, while the Kuga itself will replace the current Ford Escape. The move is part of CEO Alan Mulally’s “One Ford” strategy to sell the same vehicles in various global markets with only minor differentiation. America’s weak dollar has also helped accelerate plans to start production of European models in North America and then export them. The original plan was to build the Lincoln and Mercury versions of the Kuga in Germany and import them to North America back in 2008. [Automotive News, sub req'd] Read More

The compact crossover will be aimed at European markets and be positioned below the current Outlander. As previewed by the original Concept-cX, the production model, which is going by the name of CX, will likely feature a constant all-wheel drive system. The vehicle will be important for Mitsubishi’s European arm as it will also be a showcase for the company’s environmental awareness by debuting a family of Euro-5 clean diesel engines. The new engine is planned to have class-leading power output courtesy of a high-efficiency turbocharger and high-efficiency combustion characteristics. Some of the technologies include a variable geometry turbocharger, a diesel particulate filter and a diesel oxidation catalyst. The base engine will be a 136-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder unit churning out 206-pound-feet of torque. It will be mated to Mitsubishi’s Twin Clutch SST gearbox and a custom AWD system. If the CX proves popular, re-skinned versions of the compact crossover could also be sold by French automakers Peugeot and Citroen--just as they did with the current 4007 and C7 SUVs based on the larger Outlander. BMW Group Bringing Three New Crossovers To U.S.

BMW is planning an onslaught of new model releases over the next 12 to 18 months, with everything from hybrids to crossovers to possibly even a brand new mid-engined sports car all thought to be in the works. Some of the models confirmed for launch include the new 2010 5-Series GT, 2010 ActiveHybrid 7 and 2010 ActiveHybrid X6, as well as the compact X1 crossover.

However, soon after their respective releases, we’ll see a brand new crossover model from Mini and a redesigned X3.

However, soon after their respective releases, we’ll see a brand new crossover model from Mini and a redesigned X3. The X1 is to be positioned as a niche vehicle in the U.S. when it arrives late next year as a 2011 model. According to BMW’s U.S. chief Jim O'Donnell, the success of the vehicle will depend "a lot on the price of gas". While overseas the compact crossover will be available with four-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines, U.S. models will only feature a six-cylinder gasoline engine in either rear- or all-wheel drive configurations. Pricing will be set high for the segment--you can blame the weak dollar against the euro and anticipated strong demand in Europe. Coming in early 2011 will be a brand new crossover model from Mini. No name has been picked for the vehicle but we do know that both front- and all-wheel drive versions will be available. Pricing for the base Cooper version with front-wheel drive is expected to start at around $29,000, while the range-topping Cooper S with all-wheel drive should be priced somewhere around the $34,000 mark Finally, BMW will bring in a replacement for the X3. Due in early 2011 as a 2012 model, the new X3 will be built at the automaker’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina and should be slightly larger than the current model. Key rivals include the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK. [AutoNews, sub req'd] Read More

IIHS awards 2010 Lincoln MKT with Top Safety Pick

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently updated its testing regime to better reflect the outcomes of real-world accidents, namely to simulate the result of an accident between different sized vehicles. This saw ratings for many small cars revised downwards and reinforced the age old adage that size does matter when it comes to crash safety.

The new tests haven’t managed to negatively impact on the new 2010 Lincoln MKT, however, as the three-row luxury crossover has just been awarded the Institute’s Top Safety Pick award. Significant improvements in protection for people in rear crashes highlight the latest changes incorporated in the new model, with most of the praise being awarded for the vehicle’s new seat designs. The MKT was also praised for its side air bags that are designed to deploy up to 30% earlier than traditional air bag systems, as well as a segment-first, forward collision warning system. To qualify for the Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control. Criteria to win are tough because the award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as top crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control. Incidentally, when it comes to safety, Ford (and its Lincoln and Mercury subsidiaries) is one of the leaders in the industry. Last year Ford topped the list of automakers with the highest number of Top Safety Pick awards, with no less than 16 titles to its name. Read More
