Additionally, the Auris' 1.4L diesel engine, 2.0L diesel engine and 2.2L diesel engine have all been revised to be more efficient, but the new 1.6L petrol engine is expected to be the star of the lineup, with Toyota predicting this engine selling the most units of the Auris. The new engine features variable valve lift, enabling it to deliver more power and torque than the previous 1.6 VVT-i engine, while at the same time making significant improvements in fuel consumption and emissions levels. Power output from the engine is up by 8hp (6kW) and maximum torque rises from 157Nm at 5,200rpm to 160Nm (118 lb-ft.) at 4,400rpm. It is available with either a new six-speed transmission, or new six-speed MultiMode system with paddle-shift controls. With the manual gearbox, CO2 emissions are down eight per cent at 153g/km and fuel consumption is improved by nine per cent in combined cycle driving at 43.5mpg. With MultiMode the reduction in emissions is 15g/km to 146g/km, while fuel economy rises by 4.7mpg – more than 11 per cent – to 45.6mpg (combined). Meanwhile, the 90hp (67kW) 1.4L D-4D diesel engine has been upgraded with Toyota Optimal Drive technology, with fuel economy increasing by six per cent to 60.1mpg in combined cycle driving. Carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced, falling from 132 to 125g/km for manual models, 127g/km for versions with automatic transmissions. At the same time, torque performance is stronger by eight per cent, rising to a maximum 205Nm (151 lb-ft.) between 1,800 and 2,800rpm.2009 Toyota Auris Read More

  • SEMA debut for the 2009 Toyota Corolla

SEMA debut for the 2009 Toyota Corolla Like the new Matrix, Toyota’s 2009 Corolla is all-new. The tenth generation of the Corolla features a balance between utility and performance in its five trim levels. It’s still a subcompact sedan, but the new design cues give it a sportier, more modern shape and feel. It’s cute, for sure, but it also seems a bit busy for such a small car.

The five trim levels include Standard, LE and XLE as the more utilitarian versions, while the S and XRS are the performance-focused models. The sport-focused models feature a standard body kit designed to improve aerodynamics and appearance, altough so much plastic on such a small car looks a bit out of place - how much performance-enhancing aerodynamic effect can really occur at speeds below 100mph? Regardless, the new Corolla features a front underbody spoiler, rocker moldings, upper and lower rear spoilers and engine bay undercovers to help airflow beneath the car. The same engine options available in the Matrix are also in the Corolla, the 1.8L four-cylinder making 132hp and the 2.4L making 158hp, which is standard in the XRS. The smaller 1.8L manages a very impressive 27mpg city and 35mpg highway when combined with the five-speed manual, which is standard with the smaller engine. The S trim package comes with 16-inch steel wheels and wheel covers standard, with color-keyed body kit and sport seats up front. The XRS expands on the S trim with a rear deck spoiler, alloy 17-inch rims, strut tower brace, traction control, cruise control and chrome accents on the interior. Like the Matrix, the new Corolla will be available in February 2008. Read More

  • Toyota reveals new Auris/Corolla three-door

Toyota reveals new Auris/Corolla three-door Toyota’s new three-door Auris hatchback has been launched in Europe, a car that will eventually be sold in other markets as the Corolla hatch. The three-door model offers similar levels of interior space to the five-door thanks to the identical 2.6m wheelbase, and comes standard with electronic stability control and a MP3 capable CD player.

According to Okudaira, the reinforced rear wheel architecture needed to incorporate an AWD system has already been developed and will likely feature in a high-output diesel version for Europe. The V6 version, which will run on gasoline, is most likely intended for the American market, and if given the go-ahead, will make its debut during the US-launch of the Corolla later this year. Update: We've had lots of readers email in to ask about the above picture. No, it's not a new Toyota hot hatch design, just a design sketch of what the car could/should have looked like. Read More
