2010 Debut For Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione 'GTA'

Alfa Romeo is planning to release a special version of its stunning 8C Competizione supercar next year to mark the 100th anniversary of the company’s founding in Milan, Italy. The new car will simply be called the 8C GTA and is expected to be unveiled on June 24, 2010.

It will be a lighter and more powerful version of the current 8C Competizione, and will be available in both coupe and convertible variants. GTA, which stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita (Italian for lighter grand tourer), is the name Alfa Romeo uses for its special edition performance models and is also scheduled to appear on a lightened version of the new MiTo hatch.

GTA, which stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita (Italian for lighter grand tourer), is the name Alfa Romeo uses for its special edition performance models and is also scheduled to appear on a lightened version of the new MiTo hatch. In addition to an almost certain power hike, expect a number of key changes to both the styling and dynamics of the car. To set it apart from the regular model, the 8C GTA will likely feature a vented bonnet, an aggressively styled front bumper and plenty of exposed carbon-fiber. A stripped-out cabin with sports bucket seats, as well as more carbon-fiber trim wherever possible, will help keep weight down. Expect the 8C GTA to tip the scales at around 1,450kg – around 150kg less than the standard coupe and only 100kg heavier than its key rival, Ferrari’s hardcore F430 Scuderia. Other modifications should include a stiffer suspension set-up, carbon-ceramic brakes, and significantly wider rubber wrapped around lightweight forged alloy wheels. Of course, this will be a very limited edition model, restricted to around 100 units and carrying the famed ‘GTA’ badging to display its extra potency. [AutoExpress] Read More

SV Motor Company’s new Corvette-based 9 Competizione unveiled The current C6 Corvette platform is proving to be a popular basis for independent coachbuilders, with several firms releasing their own take on the classic sports car over the past 12 months. Corvette-based cars like the Anteros XTM, Innotech C6 and the more recent Bertone Mantide all spring to mind, and now we have the new 9 Competizione from SV Motor Company to add to that list.

Under the new sheet metal/carbon-fiber, which shares a striking resemblance to Alfa Romeo’s stunning 8C Competizione, SV has retained the basic C6 Corvette platform but has specifically tailored some of the specifications for use in its new car.

The current C6 Corvette platform is proving to be a popular basis for independent coachbuilders, with several firms releasing their own take on the classic sports car over the past 12 months. Thanks to almost full carbon-fiber bodywork, SV engineers have managed to shed 132 pounds from the Corvette’s kerb weight and give the car a perfect 50/50 front to rear weight distribution. While the powertrain has been left untouched (customers will be able to choose which Corvette model to use), SV engineers have tweaked the brakes and suspension and added Pirelli PZero Rosso ultra performance tires. Lateral acceleration is estimated to be 1.03g and braking from 60-0mph is a claimed 107 feet. Peak power can be boosted, however, if customers select SV’s revised intake and a custom-tuned exhaust option. This includes the ANSA Automotive exhaust system developed by SV for use on the Ferrari Daytona and 599, which on the base LS3-powered Corvette boosts output from 436hp to 450hp and sees the 9 Competizione’s 0-60mph time drop to just 4.0 seconds. The SV 9 Competizione will be limited to 1,000 units at a cost of $99,995 which includes a new, well-equipped donor C6 Corvette purchased through their dealer network. The first showing of the SV 9 Competizione is this Saturday evening in San Francisco. The car will also be on display August 14 at the Concorso Italiano in Pebble Beach. • 8C Spider: Alfa Romeo’s most expensive model ever

8C Spider: Alfa Romeo’s most expensive model ever Our love affair with Alfa Romeo's beautiful 8C Competizione continues with news today that the even more stylish Spider convertible will be available for U.S. deliveries by January next year. Like the hardtop, Alfa Romeo will build just 500 examples of the 8C Spider and only 35 are scheduled to arrive on local shores.

This means that even with a price tag of $299,000 (including shipping), getting your hands on one will be tough. This level of pricing, incidentally, means that the 8C Spider is the most expensive Alfa Romeo in history and it should remain that way for some time to come.

Our love affair with Alfa Romeo's beautiful 8C Competizione continues with news today that the even more stylish Spider convertible will be available for U.S. deliveries by January next year. The cars are built in Modena, Italy, and share their mechanicals with the Maserati Granturismo. Power comes from a 4.7L V8 engine with a peak output of 450hp (335kW) at 7,000rpm. This engine has been matched to a self-shifting 6-speed gearbox (with computerized selection of the gears via levers behind the steering-wheel), and a self-blocking differential unit. Controlling all that power is some of the best brakes in the business. Sitting inside the pretty 20in wheels are a set of carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes measuring 380mm up front and 360mm in the back. The 8C Spider also gets Alfa Romeo’s VDC traction and stability system to maximize safety. Next year is Alfa Romeo’s centenary and to mark the event the automaker is expected to launch a high-performance ‘GTA’ version of the 8C hardtop. Only 100 units are expected to be built but there may be more built if Alfa Romeo decides to offer an 8C Spider GTA as well.Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione SpiderFirst drive: Alfa Romeo 8c Read More
