Since the GTbyCitroen supercar crossed the pixel-reality barrier and leapt out of Gran Turismo 5 and onto the street, talk of a limited production run has circulated. Now that talk is taking shape, with an expected production run of just six cars according to the latest reports. Back in December we brought you the first hints that the French-branded Sony Playstation video game car might see actual sales, but the newest information claims to be based on inside information from Citroen's product chief Vincent Besson, reports Autocar. The low-slung and futuristic supercar will be priced around £1.1 million ($1.8 million) - about the same as the comparatively common Bugatti Veyron. Most interestingly, though the high-tech construction and carbon fiber materials of the concept are mostly expected to carry over to the production model, the engine will be sourced from either Ford or GM in V8 format. After all, when you need a 500hp+ crate V8, there's no one better to turn to than the Americans. Unlike the Americans, however, the V8 powerhouse will likely be linked to a paddle-shift gearbox, but the final technical specs are still being worked out, so until the car sees its likely production-form reveal at this September's Frankfurt Motor Show, it's just speculation. GTbyCitroen concept hits the streets of London At last year's Paris Motor Show, Citroen stunned the audience with a dramatically styled supercar dubbed the GTbyCitroen. And in May Citroen revealed that the low-slung and futuristic vehicle would be tackling some of motorsport's most prestigious events this summer. The third and final stop left on the schedule is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which runs July 3-5 at the legendary British locale. And in May Citroen revealed that the low-slung and futuristic vehicle would be tackling some of motorsport's most prestigious events this summer. The third and final stop left on the schedule is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which runs July 3-5 at the legendary British locale. In the lead up to the event, the striking concept car has hit the streets of London. The result of a unique partnership between Citroen and Polyphony Digital Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony, creators of the Gran Turismo game series, the concept measures nearly five metres long and just over a metre high. As part of its London tour, the virtual-turned-reality supercar swapped pixels for Piccadilly as it swept through the world famous circus, toured Regent Street, rounded Trafalgar Square and cruised down the Mall past Buckingham Palace. At next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the GTbyCitroen will participate in the event’s hill climb as part of the Sunday Times Supercar Run. The famous 1.16-mile dash hosts some of the world’s most incredible cars, both past and present, each year. But the GTbyCitroen ought to be used to sharing tarmac with the biggest names in the business by now. The concept’s styling is characterized by a large wraparound windscreen which flows into the roof and on into the rear mobile airfoil. The dynamic supercar effect is further enhanced by wide air intakes, a flat underside, rear air-diffuser, clear-cut horizontal headlamps, gullwing doors and diamond-effect 21in aluminum wheels. Last month the car also participated in the 24 Hours Nurburgring race in which it took a single 'lap of honor' around the circuit. It was also on display at the Polyphony stand during the event. Then earlier this month it joined a line of other supercars at Le Mans for the 'Grande Parade des Pilotes', a presentation of the 150 drivers and 50 teams taking part in the actual competitive portion of the 24-hour event race weekend. Despite all the pomp and circumstance, however, there's still no clear roadmap from Citroen on when the supercar will make it to its limited production run. Perhaps an announcement could be due at Goodwood, but we'll have to wait and see.Citroen GT Concept car at Paris Motor Show Read More

Upmarket Citroen DS4 and DS5 coming in 2011 Moving up in the automotive world is a difficult task, whether it's Acura trying to reach tier 1 luxury status or Hyundai-Kia seeking recognition as a globally competitive automaker. Moving up in the automotive world is a difficult task, whether it's Acura trying to reach tier 1 luxury status or Hyundai-Kia seeking recognition as a globally competitive automaker. Citroen has faced its own difficulties in recent years, producing products that outstrip the brand's reputation. The French automaker recently unveiled a new concept car named after its legendary DS that previews a future range of upmarket vehicles that will help kick off the transformation into a “near-premium” brand. The concept was the compact DS Inside, which was first displayed back in March at the Geneva Motor Show. The DS moniker this time around stands for "Different Spirit" and the concept provides the basis for a new line of cars to be named DS3, DS4 and DS5, hinting at bigger and better models to come. The first of these will be the DS3, which has already been spied testing in prototype form and is due to be unveiled at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. As for the DS4 and DS5 models, Citroen has confirmed that these will be available in 2011 and will be offered with a diesel-electric hybrid option. Autocar reports that the DS4 and DS5 will be mechanically related to the C4 and C5 ranges, but will be further differentiated from their counterparts than the DS3 and C3 thanks to more upmarket interiors and unique styling. The DS4 will borrow elements from 2005’s C-Sportlounge concept pictured above, while the DS5 will be more heavily influenced by last year’s Hypnos. The smaller DS4 will be aimed at the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008 in Europe, while the DS5 will take on bigger and more premium crossovers like BMW’s X6.2008 Citroen Hypnos hybrid conceptCitroen DS Inside Concept official photos2011 Citroen DS3 spy shots Read More

Citroen upgrades diesel V6 to 240hp, 31mpg High-efficiency diesel engines are the solution to near-term CO2 taxation and fuel efficiency rules for Europe, and Citroen doesn't want to be left behind. Accordingly, it has updated its diesel engine to a new 240hp (179kW), 3.0HDi specification.

That power rating, humble as it may seem alongside today's V8, V6 and even turbo four-cylinder offerings, is the highest power output ever for a production Citroen engine, according to the company. But despite the jump in power - 32hp (24kW) better than the 208hp (155kW) 2.7L unit it replaces - the engine is also about 15% more efficient.

Both vehicles average 31mpg US in the combined cycle, a 13% improvement for the C5 and a 17% improvement for the C6. Emissions were cut at similar rates, down to 195g/km for both cars. Particulate matter is trapped by a new Diesel Particulate Filter System (DPFS). The engine will make its retail debut later this summer, more than a year ahead of the 2011 Euro V emissions mandates with which it complies. Read More

Fiat's sudden interest in Chrysler and Opel highlight the Italian auto giant’s desire to build a large scale global manufacturing operation, but now that a deal with Opel appears to be far from certain there’s speculation as to where Fiat's interest will fall next. In top contention, it’s been revealed, is France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen group. With a freshly inked deal with Chrysler, many analysts are speculating that without the stability of Opel backing up the allaince, Fiat may find itself on shaky ground. Equity analysts have described Chrysler as the weakest link in Fiat's current expansion strategy and an alliance with PSA could help Fiat find its feet again, reports Automotive News. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne's eagerness to gobble up as many companies as possible isn't surprising, considering his theory that the global economic crisis will wipe out all but six automakers, leaving just a few major European brands. This largely explains Marchionne's desire to swallow companies like Opel, but if PSA and Fiat were to team up, the results would be even more grand than the potential Fiat-Opel tie up - with possible sales for the combined brand reaching as high as seven million units. But forging an alliance with PSA might turn out to be more difficult than originally thought, especially considering the French government's recent cash stimulus of €3 billion to the struggling PSA. Additionally, other companies have sought alliances with PSA with little success, partly due to PSA's desire to remain independent. Should both the options of Opel and PSA fall through for Fiat, then Marchionne may find himself at the negotiating table with another GM brand - the small volume Swedish brand Saab. Failing to strike a deal with Opel and PSA would leave Fiat in a precarious position, and absorbing Saab's struggling business may not be the best manoeuvre for Fiat but it may have no other choice at that point.
