2010 Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita: Diamond Weave Carbon Fiber Special

Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg's parent company is currently tangled up in the purchase of Saab, but that's not stopping the masters that build the CCX from advancing their craft, as proved by the CCXR Trevita revealed today.

The car is named from a Swedish contraction meaning "three whites," which signifies the unique silvered carbon fiber bodywork of the Trevita. The company's Diamond Weave exposed carbon fiber bodywork is the epitome of high-tech's marriage of form and function.

The core CCXR feature set is the basis, and each gets a double carbon fiber wing, paddle-shift transmission, Inconell exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes, a hydraulic lift system for getting around town a bit more easily, and a range of creature comforts including a custom navigation and entertainment system. Pricing for the Trevita hasn't been revealed, but expect it to be suitably super. As with most of the hot bits of automotive machinery cruising the 'Net these days, expect the Trevita to put in an appearance at the Frankfurt Auto Show next week. Koenigsegg joins EV race with new Quant supercar concept 'Extreme' is a word that's bandied about all too easily in the realm of high-end supercars, but in the case of Koenigsegg it's simply the most accurate way to say it: their cars are extreme. The latest to join the Swedish stable is the Quant, revealed as a full-scale model at the Geneva Motor Show today.

The vehicle is in fact the brainchild of fellow Swedish firm NLV Solar AG - a pioneer in photovoltaics and electrical power technology. 'Extreme' is a word that's bandied about all too easily in the realm of high-end supercars, but in the case of Koenigsegg it's simply the most accurate way to say it: their cars are extreme. The latest to join the Swedish stable is the Quant, revealed as a full-scale model at the Geneva Motor Show today. The vehicle is in fact the brainchild of fellow Swedish firm NLV Solar AG - a pioneer in photovoltaics and electrical power technology. The project was born when NLV commissioned Koenigsegg to develop and design a “car of the future”, incorporating the company’s proprietary solar technology. The end result is the four-seater solar electric Quant. The RWD Quant is powered by a pair of AC induction electric motors rated at a combined output of 512hp (382kW) and 527lb-ft (715Nm) of torque. The twin-motor design eliminates the need for bevel gears or a differential, simplifying the lay-out and giving constant and controlled power proportioning to the rear wheels, in both drive and coast mode. The projected curb weight of is 1,780kg, which should result to a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 275km/h. To help save as much weight as possible, the Quant features a carbon-fiber monotube backbone chassis and a proprietary power storage system called Flow Accumulator Energy Storage (FAES). Developed by NLV, the FAES system weighs a total of 450kg and contains no hazardous material or heavy metals like lithium-ion batteries being used by most other carmakers. NLV claims the FAES system can be charged to full capacity in 20 minutes and give the vehicle a range of 500km. Helping to extend the range is a solar-cell coating called thin-flm that is applied to the car’s body. Finally, the Quant is also fitted with a brake-energy recovery system. The body of the Quant measures in at 4,879mm in length, features a pair of gullwing doors, and can seat four adults. Interior features include multiple infotainment display screens, tri-zone climate control, and LED detailing. Koenigsegg and NLV plan to eventually build the Quant for public sale and are currently working on the first working prototypes.Koenigsegg Quant Concept Read More
  • duPont Registry picks 11 best vehicles

duPont Registry picks 11 best vehicles Choosing the best vehicle in any category can be a daunting task, with so many worthy contenders and room for subjectivity. Nevertheless, the duPont Registry has once again chosen its 11 'Best of' winners in a range of categories, and claims to have found that cars in general are trending toward green ideals and away from raw horsepower.

It's an interesting conclusion to reach considering the list of cars that took the top 11 spots. Of the winners that are actually in production, only one - the Tesla Roadster - falls below the 450hp (335kW) mark, and it's purely electric. The remainder are big-power bruisers that offer little in the way of... Choosing the best vehicle in any category can be a daunting task, with so many worthy contenders and room for subjectivity. The remainder are big-power bruisers that offer little in the way of green redemption. Koenigsegg's 1019hp (760kW) CCXR burns ethanol, so it may rate as green depending on one's viewpoint, and the still-in-development Ronn Motors Scorpion is designed from the ground up to be an enviro-friendly supercar, but the remainder of the list is a veritable who's who of the clasically excessive. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, for example, tops the list as 2009 Car of the Year. It hardly requires explanation for the anti-green properties of a 987hp (736kW) two-seater to become obvious. Ferrari's new California - itself touted as a 'greener' Ferrari by its makers - ranks as best convertible, but its 460hp (343kW) V8 hardly qualifies as eco-friendly. Not even the Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe - one of the least powerful cars on the list - has any legitimate environmental credibility, and it still rates at 453hp (337kW). But regardless of duPont's spurious claims of the death of horsepower, one clear trend has cemented itself at the forefront of the new list: the overall price of the best picks. Last year, the total price of the 11 cars was just $1.5 million. This year, the Koenigsegg CCXR alone added 50% to that total with its $2.3 million price tag. Adding the rest together brings the total past $4.5 million, thanks in large part to the special edition Veyron Grand Sport.
