SLS-enhanced C 63 AMG Performance Package Plus Coming To America

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is an impressive car by any measure, though its looks have certainly proven divisive. The C 63 AMG, on the other hand, has earned fairly widespread acceptance. The latest performance package for the C 63 AMG throws a little SLS into the mix, upping the performance and appearance accordingly. And according to Mercedes-Benz USA, we Americans won't have to simply drool and envy our European friends.

In an email interchange with Edmunds, Mercedes-Benz spokesman Rob Moran wrote, "We'll likely adapt the engine modifications as part of the existing P30 package for the C63. Expect this early next year. Sorry, but a price has not been finalized." That's just fine Rob--we'll gladly wait and see. Pricing won't be cheap, however, as it starts around €7,000, or about $10,500 in Europe. We'd expect similar pricing here--there are some fairly exotic additions included. While the C 63 AMG might not be as much the driver's car as the Audi RS4 or the BMW M3, it deserves its place in the mid-range super sedan hall of fame for its pure, unadulterated power. And the Performance Package Plus adds 30 horsepower to that heady mix, bringing the total to a whopping 487 horsepower. So where does the SLS get mixed in? Mercedes-Benz says it comes in the form of the forged pistons inside the 6.3-liter V-8 engine, adopted together with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft that together cut almost 7 pounds of rotating and reciprocating mass from the engine's internals. This makes the engine freer-revving, more willing to spin and helps reduce power lost parasitically. Enhanced engine management helps extract even more power, pushing performance further as well. The C 63 AMG Performance Package Plus is good for 0-62 mph in just 4.4 seconds, 0-124 mph in 13.9 seconds, though top speed is limited to 155 mph. Still, it beats the regular C 63 AMG by up to 1.2 seconds in the dash to 124 mph. Big carbon ceramic front brakes help turn all that increased performance into quickly-dissipated heat when it's time to slow down. The engine compartment is dressed up with a titanium grey variable intake manifold, while the interior gets a nappa leather and Alcantara treatment. On the outside, the car gets a carbon fiber trunk lid lip spoiler, reflecting the influence of the C-Class DTM vehicles just as the car's performance potential draws near its racing counterparts. The North American launch will bring only the E350 4matic version in June of 2010 as a 2011 model. So far no other E-Class wagon variants are planned for American sale. A sport-configuration variant will be available for the first time on the U.S. E-Class wagon, however, bringing a special grille, more aggressive front and rear fascias, twin trapezoidal exhaust pipes, 'twist' side rocker panels, cross-drilled brake discs with colored rotors and five-spoke 17in alloy wheels. Optional 18in alloys are available as an AMG wheel package upgrade. With a load capacity of up to 1,950 liters, the E-Class Estate (length/width/ height: 4,895/1,854/1,471 mm) sets the standard in its class. Furthermore, the elbow width in the rear has been increased by 50 mm to 1,505 mm over the previous model, while rear headroom with has also improved by 50 mm to 1,010 mm. Like the sedan, the range of engines available worldwide for the new wagon will comprise four, six and eight-cylinder units with outputs from 100 kW/136 hp to 386 kW/525 hp – the top end model being the E63 from AMG. The four-cylinder engines are newly developed direct-injection units, which develop a higher output and torque than the comparable V6-engines of the preceding series despite a smaller displacement. The top model in the new E-Class diesel range is the six-cylinder E350 CDI with an output of 170 kW/231 hp, which uses 0.5L per 100km less fuel than the previous E320 CDI. Along with the debut of the new wagon, Mercedes will also be launching two new engines for the E-Class range under the E200 CGI and E200 CDI guises.2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate wagon Read More

It's often said that the engineers at AMG have an unhealthy obsession with horsepower, but they can't really hold a candle to Edo's engineers. For Edo, the verdict was unanimous: 457hp and 600Nm is not enough. In order to set the C63 AMG right, Edo has installed a number of modifications including a newly developed high-performance exhaust system, exhaust headers, high-flow catalytic converters, new air filters and a recalibrated ECU that conveniently dispenses with the pesky speed limiter. The result of all these engine upgrades is a boost of almost 100hp to the standard C63 AMG's output, giving it a grand total of 555hp and 501lb-ft of torque. All that power helps push the Edo-prepped C63 AMG to a top speed of 199mph and will also take the super-sedan from standstill to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds. Additionally, the new exhaust system features butterfly valves to make sure the car has a bark to match its bite. Finally, a set of lightweight 19-inch wheels is also on offer, shod in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires that Edo claim should be able to handle the extra grip required from all that extra horsepower - although you'll still probably see the traction control light flickering constantly. • Sportec takes Audi S4 Avant output to 425hp

Sportec takes Audi S4 Avant output to 425hp You'd think that spending the time, effort and money to get another 92hp out of your car would yield more than 0.1 seconds in the 0-62mph dash and the same top speed, but for the Swiss tuners at Sportec, that's unfortunately exactly what happened. Despite cranking the car up to 425hp from the stock 333hp, the resulting vehicle just isn't much faster.

It sports a more aggressive look, however, thanks to a body kit and 19 or 20in wheels. Handling should be improved as well, with a 30mm lower ride height, stiffer springs and upgraded brakes also on tap.

Of course, despite the small gain in 0-62mph acceleration, performance all over the rest of the charts is improved, illustrating that acceleration from a stop isn't the be-all, end-all of performance metrics. In-gear acceleration, rolling acceleration and everyday driving will all be improved by the extra power, and Sportec claims it does it all while delivering a significant savings in fuel consumption versus the similarly powerful Audi 4.2L V8 found in other vehicles. Like many of Sportec's tuning packages, the S4 Avant kit can be had piecemeal or as a complete treatment, with each part customizable by the buyer.Sportec Audi S4 Avant Read More

The tuner’s latest efforts center on the Mercedes C-Class platform, in particular the high-performance C63 AMG. Lorinser plans to compete in this weekend’s Tuner Grand Prix on the Hockenheimring in Germany with its LV8 C-Class saloon, which has been pumped up to 500hp (368kW) and 442lb-ft (600Nm) of torque. This level of tuning will see the C-Class accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 320km/h. Handling gets a boost as well, with lowering springs giving the car a lower center of gravity and slightly greater resistance to body roll. Big 19in alloy wheels focus on lightness and style, helping put the power to the ground and keep the car agile as well. The car will compete this weekend in the C3 Class for the Tuner Grand Prix where it will be up against other tuner cars from the likes of Techart, Brabus and Kicherer.Lorinser LV8 based on the Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Read More
